I hope this will not become tradition :(
I mean there are more parts in Revell snap-kits.
Well it would be good for one thing, kit bashing with Italeri one.

Is here OK? Tamiya came through and released the 911. Looks like the same construction as the snap-kit 911 speedster, just with a different body. Almost...tamiya..almost..

:( The kit contents look an embarrassment. It's a wonder tamiya released this kit. I'd pay a fiver for it tops!

Bah, I looked forward to this kit... I mean, a very cool car made by a great manifacturer, that's pretty cool right?

But when I see it now, it dissapoints me. Very little detail, small number of parts, no engine, and those #%*% metal axles... As Saša pointed out, I will hope that Tamiya aren't making more of these children kits, but going to produce some cool kits with engines in the future. And at an affordable price; recently, the only Tamiya's that came with engines were those incredibly expensive kits like the enzo

Well, I hope Tamiya are not going to continue with this trend, they are becoming a useless company just of late. The 350Z was a joke, I brought that kit from eBay, the wheels do not turn, and the underchassis was all molded on... Rubbish.

Then the 350Z calsonic and Xnavia - Metal plate underchassis. Another useless kit, and now this..!! I respect Tamiya kits, but only for the past glory they have had.. I have been getting more and more fed up with Tamiya and their kits, they are becoming awful. The skyline Z Tune is also rubbish. I've read and seen this kit is not accurate. I brought it, don't know why. Actually used to like the skyline, but thanks to Tamiya and all the kits they released of this car, becoming a bit sick of it really. Used to look around when drving and say - Ooh Skyline, now I treat that car like a Ford Escort.. - run off the mill..!! Shame.

Tamiya have also (well it seems) given up with F1, Williams FW24 was the last one right? Their newest releases are - another rally car.. Yawn..!! The 911 is a childhood memory for me, would like to have built this, but no - Tamiya screw around again.

Nah, whats the use - might as well start giving up that they will release anything decent again. Thankfully ebay turns up their older kits - just keep buying and building them until either Tamiya get their act together - or I learn how to build Resin F1 cars.

Might look around for some Older Tamiya 1:12 f1 - that'll keep me busy for a good few months..!! Yep - another scale Tamiya give up on.

Rant over - Tamiya - great past - you now suck with model cars now, hope your paints and tools etc don't go bad..!!

I had a look at this kit too. Very basic, quite a dissapionting offering from Tamiya :shakehead. However I can see why they have done it; The kit has not cost as much to produce as a brand new molding would cost, as Tamiya have just re-used the molds from the Tamiya 911 Speedster that was released ages ago, and changed it slightly. By doing this it saves money and people will still buy it anyway.

The only release I'm looking forward to at the moment is the Peugeot 307 WRC because it is a completely new molding which should be good. Look at Tamiyas's last WRC releases (Bozian 206, Impreza Monte Carlo, Alpine A110 etc) - these are just old kits with new decals added. At least the 307 is a new car to look forward to.

Looks like it is based off the old snap loc kit they made of the flatnose?

Yeah, SPitfire, you're right. The 307 will be one of Tamiya's best models this year I believe. Due to it being a new mold, it'll be super-detailed & super-crisp :p

That would be correct. The Speedster was also snap loc. This is just a new body mold, a cheap way to get a new product on the market. I'm certainly not interested :shakehead I built the Fujimi Enthusiast Turbo when it came out, it's a nice kit.

Why don't y'all tell me these things before I place an order? Oh well, all I really wanted was the Whale Tail 911, and that's what I'm getting. I guess once it's in, I'll tell y'all how it is.

Allright, anyone ever build one of the Speedster or Flatnose kits? Surprise! Their excellent kits- especially for snap together. Really- you never knew a snap together could be this good. Build it up, and it will look right in place beside any other Porsche you've built. So it has no full engine- so what? Tamiya has never put a full engine in a 1/24 911- for the simple reason that it can't be seen. Want to detail the engine? Do it- cut the engine out of the bottom, paint it up, add some spark plug wire and a new drive wheel for the serpentine belt, reinstall it, and it will look terrific- the engine/transmission is very nicely molded. The only thing this kit falls short on is suspension detail- otherwise for detail it's on par with the other 911's tamiya has put out in the last 10 years, the 996, GT2, and GT3. Yeah, there are no brakes, but the wheels are solid on the 930, so you wouldn't know if they're there or not. Add any set of Fuimi wheels you've always wanted to see on a 930, and they should be a no-mod fit- and those Brembo discs Fujimi always includes will look great with them.

So what's the big deal?

The kit just came out this week, nobody knew until they saw the kit and instructions on the net.

I agree most items aren't visible-it is a curbside, but the simplistic interior bucket w/o separate side panels is fairly visible, especially on the Speedster. I always feel cheated when I get an old-school style kit like this w/o separate side panels. Lots of old Tamiya kits are like this. This is a new Tamiya kit using old components and a new body. Not exactly up to 2005 standards. I'm sure it'll look wonderful, but it's not raising the bar at all. It's just Tamiya squeezing the copper out of pennies.

I have no issue against snappers. I mean, the most advanced plastic models on Earth are snappers--Gundam models (think of them as Tamiya's Enzo kit that doesn't require glue). Snappers can be better than glue kits when properly engineered. They draw more casual builders to the hobby, and the experienced modelers also benefit in terms of saving time and effort on dry-fitting. Revell's Viper and Diablo snappers are exactly like that. They just have to stop marketing the snappers as children's kits, and release detailed snappers.

Looking at a finished model...

...the balance between the wheel arches and tires looks very good (a major turn-off of the Fujimi's Enthu 911), so you drop the Fujimi engine into the Tamiya body, and you'll have the best looking 911 Turbo model. (okay, it's not that simple, but it's doable.)

I think Tamiya releases these low-cost kits to be able to make magnificent kits like Enzo and Carrera GT. That's why I don't really mind... being Tamiya, it will still look very good, be it simple or not.

BUT, I still don't understand why make this particular car, since it has been made by at least two (IIRC) other manufacturers, and both with full engine detail. I would've rather seen some rare old Tamiya kit being re-released instead of this "new" kit. I just can't imagine many people buying this kit.

I don't think we can expect anymore kits of common cars like the old Tamiya. They probably don't have the leisure to produce those anymore, but will put out the usual supercars from time to time along with simple to build kits aimed at beginners.

Stop whining y'all. :screwy:

First Tamiya is not producing new kits enough and when they do it sucks? I don't get all that...

Anyway, I'm gonna buy this 911, and maybe more then once. It'll stand nice next to my other 911's + I'll probably buy one for my youngest 8 year old daughter, who expressed recently interest in the hobby, too!

Let's compare a snapper from Tamiya with a snapper from Revell, and you'll know that even in this market space Tamiya is wayyyy on top. ;)

Well, I'm expecting this kit soon from hlj. Just waiting on the shipping notice, and it'll be about 5 days till it gets here.

It is an odd move by Tamiya. Probably a kit that was produced with a limited budget. There has got to be a reason why the kit's release was delayed. The body shell's pretty crisp and looks to be a new tooling.
