Because usually the guy that "cares for her the most" is an over-bearing wuss bag that is giving her wayyy to much attention in his "caring" and ends up pushing her away because she realizes she totally owns him, and he's no longer a challenge.

Because the guy that "treats her like shit" is usually a dominant guy with lots of balls. Given he comes across as a jackass to us guys, but there is an amount of manliness associated with many jackasses, do the fact that they are usually independent, powerful leaders who obviously don't need other people's approval = strength.

The guy at band camp is a new challenege, and potentially has bigger balls because he didn't spend all the time "ever since they met" kissing her ass and giving her too much attention.

I would agree that the question was kind of confrontational, but its not really stupid. In my experience, the girls I like usually end up with guys that treat them like crap. For instance, the girl I like right now (she likes me back as well) lives 3 hours away when we're at college, so we decided not to date for now. Anyway, shortly after we talk about that, she went off and made out w/ a guy at a party, which is totally out of her character. The guy didn't talk to her for a week and she was pining over him and getting mad, then he finally started talking to her and they're making out like every day, and they aren't even dating. That might not be odd to everyone, but both her and I come from a conservative Christian background, so its kind of odd. It seems so odd that she will go off and make out w/ some guy who is a complete dick to her and then pine over him. That was kind of venting, but my point is, I kind of see the guy's point, girls dont seem to like me if I'm caring and nice, I have to be a jerk to get girls interested it seems.

But yes, in all honesty, I agree that there is a balance.
