I also removed and sprayed the injectors, they did not look dirty at all, but a couple seemed to have the ends filled with an oily substance while others were dry. I found the haynes and ford manual way short of good tips on this job, it took a while to figure out I had to remove wipers and cowl to get behind the intake manifold to remove bracket with sensors on it. I also managed to not see injector o-ring that was damaged and had to repeat the job due to spraying gas. about half the egr ports were clogged. All this fixed the light pinging I was hearing on highway when lightly accelerating. !45,000 miles on engine. No CEL. It makes me mad that mechanic that replaced the lower intake manifold gaskets didn't take the 20 seconds to clean them ports about 30,000 miles ago.
Thanks to all on this board for the info on this van.

The oily substance in the ends was what caused a missfire on my 96 3.8L. So it is a good thing that you cleaned them while you were in there.

I have also found that repair guides leave me looking for more.....which is why I have started taking pictures throughout the repair process....and posting them... I thought it might help others.
I did not remove the wiper cowl....but carefully felt around back behind the upper intake manifold. But if you want to see what you are doing back there.....removing that cowl is the only way.
