Post a link to your picture that you want to draw and I will convert it to grayscale so you can see the tones aka values (shades of gray/blacks).

That is a good way to see what needs degrees of darks/lights.

Hi nyuma,

I have the same problem with coloring my design sketches.

In general, you can say: where the light source shines directly, from 90° from top on a surface, it's completely white, and if the light source does not shine on the surface is completely black.

The more spiky the angle, the darker the surface.

(that was some bad english but I guess you understand)

Take a look at cars from a car mag or go on the street to take a look at some cars. You will see that mostly newer cars have a light edge under the side windows, about where the doorhandles are.

If you own a 3d program, try to create a shape that looks basically like a car and play around with the light source, move it around and watch.

It's hard but I think it can be learned.

Oh and please, post some of your work. I'd like to take a look at it. The pros around here can then give you advice

That is cool man. I don't do that (draw from imagination) at least not much. Are you just learning how to draw? I think you need to study real cars and how the sun reacts w/ the car before drawing from your imagination. That is just me; take it for what it is worth, nothing :)

Perhaps you can take a lamp and lamp shade (to direct the light) and grab a model car and observe the effects. You can also take the model car outside and study it in natural lighting. You then need to observe talk to your self about what you see (don't let anyone hear you). Then start drawing what you see and shading what you see.

You might want to take a basic drawing course. Can you take art classes in school?

Decide where you want the sun to shine from, and the areas angled at it will be bright, and the ones angled away will be dark.

Any recessed areas are also darker, and those that stick out are usually lighter, but the angle of the sun still applies to it.
