Drag racing gears?

[B]Which gears will give me the best performance for 1/8 mile strips,and the 1/4 mile strip. or should i set car up for on track or the other ? can one set of gears serve two masters? i have bb 402 3 spd auto ratchet shift, 3400 stahl convertor. i curently have 28.14r15 tires plan to install new slicks that will serve best.

For your set up a 4.11 would be good for the quarter and a 4.88 for the 1/8. Really depends on lots of variables like: fuel system, cam & valvetrain, rod bolts, compression ratio, car weight. The hot set up would be a 9" ford rear and have two center sections.

Any dyno sheets? Gearing should be focused on keeping the car in its powerband.

Two center sections=One with 4.11 gears, and one with 4.88. Swap them when racing 1/8 and then going to 1/4.

Yes we have dyno sheets Rollins Automotive in gainesville did for us but I dont belive them this car is Mean and Fast and what ever gears I have work quite well. she burn rubber in all three gears till i run out of gas or tires pick one.(lol) the owner has a nova almost identical to mine and i dont think hes happy about!!!! he said I should keep it 1/8 mile and he dosent want to talk how this car runs, only how it dosent run! his dyno sheets report im barely producing 300hp (BULL) this engine stock in 1970 produced 350hp + min. I will look into the quick change gears Thanks D n R

I agree with 500 and using the 4.10 ( or 4.11 ) gears for 1/4 .. but if you plan on running both tracks I would just stick with the 4.10's myself. Thats assuming you'll be bracket racing.

If you want two sets of gears I would look at either 5.13's ( 5.14's ) or 5.38's for the 1/8. Most of the BB door cars around here running 1/8 have 5.38's. I currently have 5.13's in mine with a 511 cid BBC and 16x32's. I will be switching to a 4.10 or 4.33 though since I do run a 1/4 track a couple of times a year.

A quick change rear end wasnt mentioned .. but a Ford 9" w/ 2 seperate center sections was. In other words, one set up for 1/4 and one set up for 1/8. that you would replace according to what track you were going to run.

Gotta remember that a dyno measures WHP and not BHP like the factory advertises. And did you get a wideband reading too? If you have copies, post them up. Chances are, you aren't jetted right or timing isn't right. Truth is, I would rather just pay for my 4-5hours on the dyno and have those guys go away. I don't trust them either. My dad ran this run (http://nissaninfiniticlub.net/photopost/data/500/19378AF_HP_cama-med.jpg)(I would get AF vs torque scenes how it matters more, but too much uploading) and the dyno operator ADVANCED TIMING. Not that I'm gonna say anything. I'm 18 and drive a rice-burner, what do I know? But from then on, I decided that I will tune myself with my wideband and thats that. Prolly tell me I'm running too rich at 11.5:1....lol and then not care "Its just a 4 cylinder," OH well, I ran a 13.404@105.49mph (http://nissaninfiniticlub.net/photopost/data/500/19378Img_0077-med.jpg) and a 14.@107.4mph (http://nissaninfiniticlub.net/photopost/data/500/19378Img_0078-med.jpg) with a really conservative tune(11.0:1AF and 2*retarded timing) so I'm cool for now.

Chip huh? Yea, he's too old skool for me. Slap something on and go. MPH means nothing, ET means everything. gay... His nova is nice tho. I'd only go out there to do power pulls. But I'm a lil weary of letting someone else do the throttling. They have a bad habit of not watching gauges.;)
