Scenario:
2001 Windstar, 43 K miles.
Intermittent brake light on and off a few months ago, then steadily on. Then abs light on and off intermittently with the brake light.
Now both are on constantly.
Everything seems to be running normally, no braking problems, etc.
What's the deal?

My brake Light came on not to long ago on my windstar. I checked the fluid just a wee bit low. it would come on every so often mostly when braking or taking off from a stop. This could be your problem.I just added a little and it went off. But keep in mind to check it sould be a nice very light brown color almost clear if you look at the resvior and its dark it need to be changed. or bleeded out. I getting ready to change mine out before my ABS light comes on. Dirty fluid can sometimes mess with the ABS system. Anouther cause for the ABS light are bad sensor or dirty sensor. If you want your windstar too last a while change the tranny fluid when it looks dirty on the stick I had mine changed twice so far with in 15,000 miles of each change. You will have problems if you dont keep the tranny fluid changed.. Book recomends 30000-35000 but if its dirty change it. I went with the dealer flush and fill but will change my own filter when I am ready. Just the easy way for now runs about 150.00 though but cheaper than a new trans. Hope this helps...

You should check the speed control sensor. This sensor has been known to ignite and start a engine fire! Just went through this on the 21st of July. It's a recall on some other ford models, but according to Ford the incidence of fire has not been as great on the windstars as the other models already recalled. Damage so far is estimated at around $2300. I think Ford owes me a 200 deductible, plus a rental. Working with my insurance to get it fixed. Get your windstar to a reliable shop asap.
