It happened!

I never thought it would happen and I read about it on SE-R.net. My P11's fifth gear popped out of gear while I was driving on the highway. I had no idea what happened except that all of a sudden my revs got louder and louder I immediately looked down at my shifter and it was half way in and half way out. Still not knowing what was happening I put it back in gear and a couple minutes later it popped out again. Man I was freaked!
I immediately drove to the dealer in fourth gear and they test drove my car and said that nothing was wrong with it, and if something was wrong with it they were blaming me for the mishap and said that since my car had some mods, they would not accept it under warranty. The service guy also said that he would get a mechanic to take apart my tranny to see if anything was wrong with it, and if nothing was wrong I would have to pay them the labor to put it back together. I couldn't believe what they were saying to me. So I said, "I own an Infiniti and I'm not understanding"
Well with that line they eventually fixed everything. Turns out that all my gears were burnt out, the mechanic said there was no transmission fluid in the gear box. They wanted to blame me for that too, but I have never touched anything in my transmission because well, I know nothing about it.
Has anybody elses 5th gear popped out while they were driving. I understand that if you leave your hand on the shifter it may damage the shifter ball joint or something like that which may cause this problem, but I drive with both hands.

This is common with SR20DE powered cars. Check out se-r net there's a lot about it over there. To avoid this in the future don't leave your hand on the shifter when in any gear...that's what causes this.

That is NOT correct. If you read the SE-R Mailing List archives and the info on the mailing list web site, you can get a more complete understanding. There are a number of people who have had FGPO who have never rested their hand on the shift knob.
Larry Weeks (list owner) has been the unofficial collector of info on FGPO. In his analysis, the original synchros had teeth that were a little short for variances in production and allowable play.
I'm not trying to flame you, but I want to make sure misinformation is not being spread.
