Seafoam Cleaning

Bought a can of seafoam a few weeks back for my boat, but had some free time this weekend and couldn't resist using it on the Windstar. Didn't really have any major issues, no knock or pinging but did have an annoying valve flutter/clatter. If you aren't familiar with seafoam, you suck some through the PCV or brake booster line, add some to the oil, and add some to the gas. I did the intake treatment via the PCV line, did get a good amount of white smoke but very brief. Also added some in the oil and as we drove during the weekend the valve noise seemed to go away. I'll have to post back if the valve noise is completely eliminated with the treatment or just reduced. I'll get another can soon for the gas treatment and give that a try.

Being a dealer tech, I probably shouldn't say this, but sea foam is my favorite product in the world. Never use it on a customer's vehicle, but it'll shut up carboned valves and stuck lifters quicker than anything. Never added it to fuel on a car, though...only on two strokes.

Why not into fuel tank? Don't they say to do this also?

Didn't get much smoke from my Windstar, but when I put it in my 93 Mercruiser it smoked like crazy. Sent a huge white smoke cloud across the street completely enveloping two neighbors as they walked their dog and another that was mowing. Just a little bit embarrassing but it smoothed the idle out nicely.

Question:
When added to the oil, does it just burn off?
Or do you suggest doing just prior to an oil change?

From my understanding, seafoam is about the only cleaning additive to the oil that doesn't require an oil change quickly after. You just leave it in until the next oil change.

Follow the directions as stated on can but have new fuel filters on hand because it will break loose all the junk that has accumulated over the years and will clog filters.Add it to your oil and go for a nice ride and change oil the next day.If you ride with it till your next oil change you may cause damage to engine .Just remember just like gas tank when you add it to crankcase it will break loose all the crud and may clog oil filter and what gets thru the bypass will now be circulating thru your engine.

I'm fuzzy about the intake procedure...do you pull the PCV valve out, turn it upside down and pour the 1/3 can in that way?

I just popped the line off the top of the valve and inserted it into a measuring cup with the right amount of Seafoam. Let the suction pull the liquid in, you won't have to pour it. Try to get it in quickly but not fast enough to stall it, you'll probably need someone in the driver's seat keeping it running and then shutting it down when you get it all in.
