Chris Farley & Matthew Perry!
:D
*edit* even though they weren't playing Lewis & Clark.
Oh fuckit.
They were sent by Jefferson to find a water route across North America and explore the uncharted west.

Lewis and Clark? Nope.
Hone Heke, however, was the pioneer of thoughtless Maori vandalism, y'see back then they didn't have spray cans to tag with or any dairies to tag on, that didn't stop him being resourceful and hacking at flag poles with an axe. So innovative, is it any wonder that Maori were also pioneers of Trench warfare?

Nope, ya don't. I know my US history, so I'll put the correct answer below. If you don't wanna know, don't read it.
****answer*****
Henry Hudson was the fellow to search for the Northwest Passage. Unrelated to Lewis and Clark.
Jefferson (elected 1800-1808) bought the Louisina Purchase doubling America's size. France sold it the the US becasue the French and Indian War(Also called 7 years war) cost the French many of it's colonies, and was looking to get out of the colony business. Lewis and Clark explored this new territory, with the help of Indian Sacagewea.
The Western territory wasn't aquired by the US until the mid-1800's, following the Mexican war.
Forgive me if I'm incorrect anywhere in the answer, It's late.

Explorers of Australia, I know one: Thaddeus Kosciuszko, a Polish explorer who pretty much ran all over the globe. Discovered Australia's highest peak, Mt. Kosciuszko (pronounce Kozzi-osko :) )
I am sadly uninformed however about other Australian explorers.
But I do know about the dog that sat on the tucker box, 5 miles from Gundegai.

Yep, you're right:
The “East Coast of New Holland” which was later to be Cape Everard, was sighted on 19 April 1770.

It was closer to $15 million.
And it wasn't exactly 'dirt cheap', that translates into nearly $200 million today. While still cheap for all the land that was acquired, it wasn't 'dirt' cheap.
Now.. the entire island of Long Island for $24 is dirt cheap ;)

Trench warfare, guerilla warfare of sorts...they gave the brits a fair few spankings in the wars. (nothing like a patu from the treetops to ruin your day).
*edit* bomb shelters too!

The Aboriginals first discovered Australia some 40,000 years ago (and more). But the first to discover Australia other then them in recorded history was in the 15th century, by the Dutch, they landed on what is now called The Northen Territory.
Cook was the first to explore the east coast, and form a settlement, but yes, it is said he discovered "Australia", but he wasn't the first.

That's being a bit harsh, even I wouldn't heap all Maori under the vandal banner.
Perhaps you could try having a bit more of a sense of humour about a light-hearted, un-PC, but firiendly dig at Maori. Not trying to be harsh, but you certainlty seemed offended over nothing.
