1974 Porsche Turbo Carrera RSR - I've been waiting to get to this project for quite a while and only recently got all the key parts together. Nitto body, Fujimi chassis and interior, Fisher Resin wheels.

Waiting for the clear coat to cure before polishing.

I'll need to make the exhaust and turbo plumbing that shows in the rear.

Awesome start so far Ken. It'll be another great build from you.

It's inspiring me to get busy on my 935.

Absolutely marvellous start!!!

Now I do am a little worried by the decals : are they the ones that came with the Nitto kit? If so, I should tell you that they are wrong : the names on the car say "Müller - Van Lennep" (who finished second in the 1974 le Mans race) and the race numbers say "21". It should be n° 22, that was the racenumber of that car.

Or you should change the names, becaise "Koinigg - Schurti" drove the n° 21 car...

Mach 1 2003 - Yea, I have a 935 to do also.

Sennake - These are the Nitto decals, but they dont have any driver names at all. You're right about the car numbers and the drivers. I dont know why they didnt render the more successful car #22. The decals were a nightmare, as they were about to fall apart. I suspected they were in bad shape, so I put a lacquer clear coat on them before applying. Needed a lot of Microsol, also.

As I mentioned, the wheels are from a Fisher resin 917 kit. I filled in the simplified tread with epoxy putty to make them slicks. I'll post a pic soon.

Odd. I have the 1/20 kit and the decals are wrong. Or are you talking about the 1/24 kit?

Sennake - this is the 1/24 kit.

Quick update

Interior with only major details. Couldnt find reference pics of the interior, so this is a best guess. I know the car has the oil lines running through the interior and the back seat has a fuel tank in it.

Wow, those side decals look a nightmare! Did you find them easy to apply? And were they in one piece or several pieces?

The side decals were printed as one piece, but they ended up in three or four pieces by the time I got them on.

One of my automobile icons! Nicely build. One question: didn´t #21 run at Le Mans with the conventional rear-side windows? (as oposed to #22, with the NACA ducts seen in here).

The car had a fuel tank on the cockpit, but it extended to the side of the seat and had no filler on top.

Keep the good work.

Got any pictures?
I have only been able to find 2 or 3 pictures of the exterior of car #22 at the LeMans race. Due to the lack of reference pics and only so-so quality of the body shape, I haven't been sweating the details and have used a fair amount of artistic license. According to my sources, the fuel tank and two fuel pumps were moved to the interior, with the fuel filler caps on each side. The fire extinguisher system occupies the space under the front where the fuel tank usually is. The filler on the front of car is for the oil tank.
I've made significant progress in recent days and will post pics soon. Thanks for the comments!

Im not a "racing model nazi". i try and find a decent reference pic and work off that. it seems your doing a good job to me. unless you have shelves of reference material ($$$) it will never be "accurate". looks great and keep it up!

Please don´t take my comments to seriously, I´m not a "rivet counter" and truly appreciate your work - I have the same kit on the pile, to build, so I will follow this one closely. Just trying to help.

Here is a pic of the interior:

For the details, also go to the Gunnar site, they took apart one of these to bring it back to Carrera specs:

I think I have a picture of #21 running, at home. If I can find it tonight, I´ll post it here.

No offense taken, its like the old cliche' - a picture is worth a thousand words. Adding any reference pics to the thread will serve others that build the same subject later.

A couple of building notes: If you put a Fujimi chassis under the Nitto body, you'll have to stretch the wheelbase a couple of milimeters. The Nitto turbo parts that hang out back are pretty poor for detail and realism, so I put together some parts from the parts box. Pics coming soon - I promise.

Ok, here are some more. In the little one, one can see that #21 was still the "first version" of the car - w/o covered windows or NACA ducts.
Out of curiosity, there is also an image of the car on the LM tests. Although don´t know what chassis it is, you can see the "standard" side "glass". Also, another photo of the interior and the back. One other thing is that, up to a certain point, the cars runned with the turbo setup covered by some plate with holes; really wouldn´t know what #21 had at Le Mans.
Hope it helps.

Truly an amazing car. Although the 935 got much more exposure (and sucess) this will be forever "my first outrageous Porsche" - I was 11 years old in 1974 and still have some magazines and newspapers from back then.

Thank you!

What colour did you use - I´m building a 1973 RSR Martini and I´m not very sure with wich one to go, more Silver or, more Aluminum (I mainly use Tamiya TS cans)?

I used Tamiya Gloss Aluminum. Don't remember the number. I believe this is an accurate color for this car.
