95 Windstar Parking Rear Brake

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix my Rear Brakes? I recently changed the Shoes & Cylinders on both rear wheels. Then I noticed that the Left Rear Drum was running very Hot. I seems that the Parking Brake Cable does not release all the way. Its about an inch shorter than the Right Side. I don't see any adjustment for this and there does not appear to be an equalizing Gizmo on the cable. I suspect that the cable itself is tight & not releasing all the way. To compound the problem, the cable is attached under the fuel tank and not easy to get to. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in this area. Thanks, JM

Hello Jmas,

The brakes are "equilized" via the little bar where the single cable coming from the brake handle attaches to the two cables going to the rear brakes. This is where the adjustment screw is too. Perhaps a cable could be binding in the sleeve that goes into the bottom of that brake, but, I've never seen this happen. My guess is your new slave cylinder is binding.

Coach

You are probably right on target with the cable hanging in the housing theory. I have experieced this situation ... but not on my Winnie.

Had this happen on my old Mercedes, one side was not releasing fully when the handbrake was released. Didn't notice it until the car hit a patch of ice one day ... spun around in the street just as I came off the ice. I figure the hanging rear wheel came to a "full stop" while on the ice. Had to replace the cable and housing assembly ... and stay on top of the lubrication.

Thanks! I'll pull out the CRC next time I'm back there.

The Cable was hanging in the housing and overpowering the spring to release the parking brake. It was a little difficult to replace the cable lying on my back (Lift Recommended) making the connection under the fuel tank. A couple of hours work & the brakes are now fine. My thanks to all that responded.
