What kind of scantool should I get?

I've read several forums on taking my Blazer to Autozone for a free test of any error codes. But I've also read where my 95 Blazer is too old for their code readers. Where can I get a good scantool that won't cost me an arm and a leg and what kind should I get?

I'm an oldschool shadetree mechanical type of guy who hasn't had to use one before so I don't know much about them.

95 was the transition year. Some of them can be read with scanners. If your PCM is under the hood on the right side fender, then yours can be read with any code scanner. Just tell the guys at Autozone that it is a 96.

If your PCM is in the dash, you don't need a scanner you can just jumper the pins in the ALDL and it will use the CEL to flash the codes.

Yip, if you have the CPI engine, an OBDII scanner will read it.

Not all 95 CPI's had the ecm under the hood. If he has it under the dash it obviously can't be read with an ODBII scanner. And if he has the real funky one with the ecm under the dash but with the ODBII ALDL then no regular odbi or odbii scanners will read it. You would need an ODBI scanner with the adapter.
