Just a question for anyone who might know - there is a ticking noise - getting louder by the day - on the drivers side of my 87 635csi, it always has ticked but now it is very loud - any idea what this is, and/or how to solve it?
Many thanks

You didnt say whether it was inside or outside noise. If it is outside you might want to check the front wheel bearings. Or the rear ones if it is from the rear of the car. If the noise stops when you stop the car that would be the most logical problem. Wheel bearings and seals are only about $25 for both sides and should take about an hour or so to change on the front

most likely rocker arms need adjustment or other wise one your hydrolic lifters is stuck or colapsed which means u will destroy the camshaft in a while - its very typical for hi-mileage engines-just live with it or replace it ypurself not that complicated. Also to make sure whether its lifter or a valve hook a vacuum gage and if the arrow flickers 2 or 3 in its a lifter or a valve.

Thanks for the replies, to give a bit more information, the ticking does seem to come from the engine, but on the drivers side. I wasn't unduly worried about it at first as it sounded like the ticking I used to have on my 325i. It ticks very loudly at certain revs, fast ticking on fast revs etc. It has got progressively louder - the car has done 135K, 10K of those done by me in the past year.

Sounds like either your valves need adjusting or perhaps you're hearing a fuel injector. You don't have to worry about a lifter going bad, the M30 doesn't have any, but if your valves are out of adjustment it still creates a lot of wear on your valve train. Your fuel injectors are a single pintle design which click pretty loud anyway, cut a length of broomstick and, while standing on the left side of the car, place one end on each injector and the other end against your ear. See if one is louder than the others, if so, they all could use a good cleaning, BG44K cleaner is about the best there is, but hard to find. Do a valve adjustment and check out the two bolts holding on the oil feed tube above the camshaft while the valve cover is off. They are notorious for backing out and causing oil starvation on the cam, you'd hear that too. Hope all works out.
