I just recently bought a 1968 Chevelle convertible with a 396 Big Block...
Of course, during the buying process, I asked what kind of oil it took and was told, but I was too "awe-struck" by the car to write it down...
Now that the transaction is complete, the previous owner will not return any phone calls or emails asking him again what kind of oil it takes...
Therefore, I will need to flush the current oil from the system and start new...
With that in mind, does anyone have any recommnedations for what kind of oil to use??? synthetic or not??? 10W30??? 10W50???
PLEASE HELP and THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Hello Brandon,
From what I've learned, Pennzoil 10W30 is recommended by engine rebuilders and it's inexpensive too. Synthetic was recommended too - but I haven't tried it. As for filters, go with a WIX brand or NAPA Gold, or an equivalent. Hope this helps.

You do not want to switch to a synthetic oil without overhauling the engine first. If you switch and it has not been running synthetic, it will cause leaks and can lead to blown head gaskets.

Thats not totally true. I have been running synthetic blend in my 350 and it has 162,000 miles on it without a rebuild and does not leak a drop. I replaced the valve cover gaskets because they were original thats it. It doesn't burn any either. Basically the best Synthetic oil is Mobil 1 or conventional Penzoil, or Castrol 10w30(which is the best in my opinion). You could also go with a blend like castrol Syntec or Valvoline is good also. Good Luck with it.

Unless you live in a cold climate, you can run straight 30, or straight 40 if you really get on it. Pennzoil is about as good as ARCO gas... it's not... Quaker State is good, and there are other good oils, but I hear Pennzoil is cheap, cause it's cheap.. If you live in a colder climate, then you'll want to run a 10W30 or 10W40... the 40's thicker for Higher performance, if you really get on it, race it etc... go with the 40.. if you just cruise it.. you're good with 30
