The Z forums would be a better place to ask this.

I'll move it there.

well interesting question.

What kinda mods you talking about, what year Z? What model, Twin turbo or NA?

A general answer is, yes. The 300ZX is a great car to do performance mods to, but they tend to cost considerably more than a Civic or most commonly modded cars on the road, and they are considered to be one of the more difficult cars to work on do to engine bay space. But much past that the Twin Turbo has only one equal in the US, and thats the last model Supra.

*hops on my soapbox*
Now I suggest you do much more research before you dicide on buying a Z car, many of us are easily offended by kids picking up a Z and then destroing it because they dont know what they are doing. And by offended I dont mean like you hurt our feelings I mean like if we ever see you odds are we might get violent. But we ARE a bit fanatical when it comes to our Fairladies.
*steps down from the box*

Good luck in your choice.

well i was thinkin on gettin one of the newer z's maybe 1993-1995 ones, if i could find one with good milage in my area, i think i saw some '93s z's around here wit pretty good milage, im not sure what it was exactly i dont think it was a TT, and u said that they are expensive? what did u mean i didnt catch it, did u mean the parts for it are expensive or the car itself?

how much did u pay for ur Z?

and if there is any other good tuner car close 2 a Z considering the price and the performance, maybe a 3000gt or something idk if there are any other cars i would b better off getting plz list em here. thx

hey, dont worry i shall treat her well, considering that i am 16 u would say im not mature enough yet and will do crazy things with a fast car, not me, i been driving since i was 9, first on my dads knees, than when i got into it my dad would sit next 2 me in the passanger seat, i started on a MT as well because where im from (poland) people didnt buy AT's back in the days so i had 2 start on a MT... anyways all im saying is that i know how 2 handle cars and know how to treat them well.

yes, modding a Z32 can get expensive, as in parts. your not gonna pick up a $300 body kit and $250 cat-back systems. front bumpers alone for the Z32 run atleast $500 and cat-backs run about $750-$1200. just to give you an idea. performance mods are more expensive, OEM parts are more expensive, more basic maitenance...

not trynig to steer you away, just making you aware that maintaining a Z32 can be very expensive, let alone modding.

maitenance is expensive because nissan recommends that some things get changed every 60k miles and these things are important but none more important than the timing belt.

good luck!! feel free to ask away. we are all here to help!

Maybe so, but feel free to thrash it. If you don't drive the heck out of it you aren't using it for its intended purpose. Just don't lower it/put stickers all over it/spray nitrous/be an idiot, and everything should be in order for me to buy it from you. All I gotta do is rebuild the motor and I will be ready to go.

anyperson who intentionally thrashes a Z deserves to be shot, and no less.

what's wrong with just lowering the car? if you're wanting to run in a mostly stock street class in an auto-x or road track, lowering will probably be one of the best handling mods you can do.

depends on how you lower it...

if you lower it with a set of eibach performance springs, that is a very nice mod and it will help with cornering and add take away a little of that wheel well.

but if you lower by cutting your stock springs a few inches so it sits on the ground. then you deserve an a**-whooping.

....yeah, but a ricer on a budget would cut em. What is wrong with driving a Z hard? (my definition of thrashing)

DeleriousZ

driving it hard is fine... driving it stupid... now that's a completely different story... "thrashing" to me means kicking the crap out of it, doing stupid things like extended burnouts and 7000rpm drifts, bouncing it off the limiter just for the fun of it...

ricers should never, ever even come within 50 feet of a zed.. let alone drive or own one

well back to the original poster and topic.

What I meant by the Z can be expensive is the parts, example, when I got my timing belt done it was 680dollars US, for labor alone. Not to mention parts was another 300 bucks. So thats close to 1000 dollar job and all I had done was the Timing belt, cam seals, underdrive pulley install, water pump and thermostat, and the tensioner with all other accesory belts.

to answer your question my car was only 7500 and I drive a NA, AT 1995 300ZX, at the time I bought it with 100k miles exactly on the clock. Cost of maintaining and operating a Z is a bit expensive to, at your age insurance is going to kill you, no matter what model of the car you get. Then theres fuel, the Z32 only takes premium (91+ octane) at the current rate of 2.35+ a gallon and the average range of 310 miles to the tank, filling it up from there is ussually around 16.5-18 gallons, so close to 35-40 bucks a tank. Tires on it are also expensive, it is HIGHLY recommended that you stay Z rated or better with the tire choice, and at that if you go with the cheapest on the market (that I can find) Fuzions you are looking at 80 dollars a tire.

I am not tring to steer you away from the car, just tring to give you some heads up before you get in over your head and end up in trouble finnancially. I am not worried about you with the car and how you drive it, you seem to be a pretty smart young man so I need not worry about that.

here are a few alternatives to the Z32 (90-96 300ZX).

1984-89 300ZX (Z31)
1987-91 Mazda RX7 (FC3S)
1988-92 Toyota Supra (MZ)
1993-95 Ford Mustang GT (5.0L)
1994-99 Chevy Camaro Z28, and the Firebirds, and T/As of the same years.

Those are a few off the top of my head that meet close to what you are looking for, granted none of them are the best of looking cars but most of them can be had for less than 8k, and parts are relatively cheap and they are easy to maintain and easier on the wallet (not so much true for the FC3S or the Supra).

But anyway good luck in your search and choice of cars. I dont envy you on this one, I had it easy when I was your age, I had one choice and one choice only, a free 1965-66 Chevy Impalla 4dr with a 454 swap. That was THE most expensive car I have ever owned.

Don't forget the Mitsu's! Like the 3000gt TT and N/A or the eclipse turbo (although its only a 4 banger, the turbo is still decent). Otherwise good list!
