Wipers don't work on fastest speed. '94 Grand AM

We have a 1994 GRand Am we bought new. It is my wife's car. About 6 months ago, the wipers stopped working on the highest settings, but still work on low and intermittent. We took it to the dealer and they said it was the wiper motor itself. Does that sound right? They wanted $440 to change out the motor, but I can do it myself. AutoZone only wants $86 plus core for a new motor, but I want to make sure I'm replacing the right thing.

Also, can I resuse the washer motor off the old wiper motor? Is there any "secrets" I should know about before starting this project? Thanks for the help!

I think I've found the problem!!....and screw the Dealer's $440 estimate!

I looked through the vent grate and watched the motor and linkage work. The motor is working fine. The BUSHING the where the wiper linkage connects to the motor arm is worn and cannot handle the high speed mode. The linkage gets all cock-eyed and won't support the strain of the highest speed. All I need to do is replace that bushing (orange in color on our car) and it will tighten everything back up. Definately not a $440 fix.

Thanks for all the help here!

Just called the dealer. Ordered what is called the wiper "transmission". It is the linkage than connects the wiper motor to the wiper arms. I couldn't buy just the bushing. The part was part #22110425 and it was $87.18 before tax. :bloated:
