Ok, so I changed my shocks last weekend after 90,000 miles and had a pain with the passenger rear. Could not manage to get any limb of any type up there to move a wrench. Anyway, I figured taking the spare off would make more room. Never have taken it off in the life I have had it (29,000 miles to now). Guess what, its rusted. Duh, my bad I know, but what I don't know is how to get it off now. Where do I spray Blaster or WD-40 to loosen this thing up? Have a trip coming up in July and would like to be able to use my spare. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Dave,

I got my Rodeo last year(99 LS). It had 63k on it. I also assumed the spare was never taken off of it, so, one day over the summer I thought I needed to see how it comes off. It took for ever. It was rusted bad. I drenched anything that looked like it was part of the system with WD40(I think PB would work better). I let it sit for a while and tried again, repeating the WD40. Finally I was able to get it to budge, and there was a loud noise from the years of just sitting. It took all my streangth to get it to turn. I honestly thought I was going to break it, also there were moments when I figured I was doing it wrong. Truthfully, I can not believe it did not break.

All I can say is soak it in penetrating oil and use strength to turn it. I think it is a good idea to lower the tire a couple times a year, so it doesn't "freeze" up. Also, maybe oil up the components when you drop it down.

A friend of mine has a Blazer, and got a flat tire on the way to work. He had to call AAA to come because he could not get his to lower.

Thanks for the info. I just got a new can of Blaster for my last shock I took off. Guess I'll empty that can on the thing. Here goes another weekend consumed it sounds like.

No, it won't take the whole week-end. It should only take a few minutes to turn the thing. I would soak it in PB the night before. Again an hour before you plan on tunrning it. Then just turn with all of your strength.

Good advice! These under-mount tire winches will rust solid over time. Just lowering the tire & greasing up the winch cable every so often will help them stay functional when you need it.
