92 chevy silverado fuel filter

Hey all,
My truck just started having a problem recently. It is a 92 chevy silverado 4.3L V6. It died on me a few times when it was sitting there ideling and then would not start, just kept cranking over. I assume that this is a fuel filter problem and if not, I know that it is past time to change it anyways and so I was wondering, for the novice handyman, what is the way to change the fuel filter? Also if you have any ideas of something else that it could be, please let me know.

Fuel filter may be the problem. If it's throttle bodied try cleaning that up. Maybe new spark plugs. I'm not sure of the location of the fuel filter on 92 but on new body style trucks its located on the drivers side inner frame rail in front of the rear tire. Changing it is pretty much self explanitory. Undo the nuts and pull the ends of the fuel line out of the filter. Just be careful not to kink a fuel line in the process. They're made to bend at certain points.

being a 92, iwould be checking fuel pump and pressure and check wiring for fuel pump relay. the relay is located on the fire wall on the passenger side. this relay gets its power source from a positve stud on the fire wall right near the relay, check those connections.

I am looking to change the fuel filter, I decided that I would go ahead and try that and see if it helps. DO I need to release the pressure in the fuel line before I do it and if so, how? Are there any other special considerations I should take when doing this. A short step by step explanation would be awsome.

The TBI trucks do not have a service port on the fuel rail to test the fuel pressure. You can by a tool that installs in place of the fuel filter to test the pressure. Turbocity.com also sells a pressure regulator that can be fitted with a pressure gauge.

I dont know that I can be of much help to you as I own an '02 model, but those guys in the C/K section might be able to help you out a little better because that section focuses on the pre-99 style trucks. Don't worry that changing the fuel filter is difficult, when you crawl down there you'll find it's pretty simple and self explanitory. Thanks guys. I replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, distributer, and roter and it runs great now. It ended up being my fuel filter, it was almost completly plugged. I think that it was because I ran the tank down really low right before that and I must have picked up a bunch of crap from the bottom. Anyways, thanks for all your help and suggestions.

I am having a big problem with my truck and can't figure out what it is. I have a 92 silverado with a 4.3L V6 in it. Lately, my truck has died occasionally when it is ideling. After that, when I go to crank it over, it just turns over and over without ever starting. I thought that this was a fuel problem so I replaced the fuel filter and it worked great for about 4 days. Tonight, I was at home depot and I was going to leave. I started my truck and after about 30 seconds, it kind of sputtered and died. I noticed that my guages jumped around right before it died. Also, when I go to start it, I notice that the temp guage goes all the way to the right hand side. I can't remember if this is normal or not because I never paid attention to it before today. ANyways, I don't know if my thermostat is bad and giving a false temp which is not allowing my truck to start or what. Also, it sputtered and died almost right after I turned on my headlights. It has done this to me like three times at night but it also did it once during the day with no lights. Please any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If it does start and it sputters when you touch the gas pedal it is probably low fuel pressure from the pump. A theremostat can not stop the truck from starting, so its not that. If it dies and you have someone with you when it wont start, try hitting the bottom of the gas tank with a rubber hammer while someone cranks the truck over, if it starts, you need a fuel, but I would check the fuel pressure before it leaves you stranded

In your last post, if it does start, then I need a new fuel what?

Sorry, I missed that, it would meen you need a fuel pump as it is located in the gas tank.

do I have a fuel pump in the gas tank? I didn't think that the 4.3 92 did?

Yes it is in the tank unfortuneatly, most fuel injected vehicles pumps are in the tank. On your truck (depending on rust etc.) it is somewhat easier to remove the box rather than the tank to replace the pump, but you will need 4 guys to lift each corner of the box off of the frame
