Painting stock chrome rims

I have a 93 Bronco Full Size. I want to paint the stock chrome rims black but I dont want to spend the money on powder coating. I heard that I could sand the rims to make the paint stick use some kind of wheel spray paint. Does this sound right? Any better ideas? If this is accurate any suggestions on brands of paint?
