I have a 93 Topaz, it has been occassionally giving me troubles accelerating, and just a while earlier, it went bonkers on me. It wouldn't accelerate, it the brakes didn't want to stop, when I got it stopped it didn't want to go in to park, and smoke was coming out from under the hood, and it was horrible smell like burning rubber. Please if anyone has any idea what this could be, I've got 2 small children and I'm going thru a divorce, this is our only means of transportation. Thanks!

I guess by any chance did you open the hood to see where the smoke was coming from?
I own a 1992 Topaz, and the only thing I think of that might cause your problem, is kind of hard to describe but here goes.
If you Topaz is a 4 cylinder 2.3litre engine, they have a poorly designed PVC system, this system can become plugged, when this happens the engine crankcase can't breath so it forces the pressure out where ever it can, and in some cases it shoots an oily mist out under the rocker cover gasket. Once this happens, at the right spot, this oily mist lands right on the hot exhaust manifold, and starts a small fire. Then just above this spot is the rubber vaccum lines that go to your power brakes system. So these rubber lines are now burnt, and opened, so you have vaccum leak so bad the car won't accelerate, and you have no vaccum pressure going to your power brakes, hence bad braking. If this is your problem, it is repairable, but I estimate it will cost $200 to fix, $50 in parts and 2 hours labor.

I was so horrified that my car was breaking down that I didn't even think to check under the hood to see where the smoke was coming from. But the weird thing is, I got in the car 2 days later and it cranked just fine, and I drove it down the road a short ways and back, and it did just fine. I have not driven it since then, I am afraid of being stranded. Could the problem you described still possibly be the problem with this happening too?

I guess you could have a plug PVC valve that started the problem, that then plugged the connection to the intake manifold, so no vaccum could get to your power brake unit. The PVC can be plug just by some condensation, that has frozen, then melts once the car has warmed it up. The thing not being able to put it in park, is strange, but could be explained by the brakes acting up, because you need to have the brakes applied to either take the car out of park or put it into park. Or maybe with all that was happening to you at the time, you weren't appying the brakes hard enough. But the car should be looked at, maybe you have a mechanical inclined friend that could help you. The is another web site called www.tempotopaz.com that is very helpful.
I hope this helps.

Just thought I'd let you know, my Dad came and looked at my car, he then drove it for about an hour. It only acted up once. He replaced the fuel filter, it was almost completley stopped up, then he put on new spark plugs, and it is driving A OK now. Weird, I know.

Well I am glad things worked out for you, somtimes us Dad guys come in handy. :)
Sure would like to now where the smoke was comming from, and why the brakes didn't seem to work. But the brakes could be just because the car stalled, and you are use to feeling the power brakes, and when the engine is not running you just have normal brakes that you have to push harder. Well us forum guys are here if you need us, take care.
