exhaust rasp

I just modified the exhaust on my 90 bird lx, and I really like the sound and look (took everything off from the resonator back, brought an L out right behind drivers side door, stainless tip). Its better than I imagined. I have heard horror stories in the past about straight piped birds that had a real raspy exhaust, and although I have yet to encounter this problem, I was just curious, what causes it? Does it only occur when you cut the exhaust off at certain points? Thanks

You better check with your local state inspection station to see if it is legal in your state to bring the exhaust out in front of the rear tire. In my state the exhaust must exit in back of the passenger compartment. This is for your safety to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Is your life worth the look of a chrome tip coming out in front of the tire? Think about it!

Yes I do realize that in some states it is illegal to do this, but I don't believe its a problem here. Also, the pipe is far enough away from the car that there would really be no problem with exhaust leaking into the car. But that doesnt answer my question lol, what causes that harsh rasp?

It Probably Depends on the pipe used Now I Have my Car Straight Piped And It Has Nothin on It But Cats And A Pipe....No Rasp.....Actually Sounds Really Good Kinda Like A V8 Ive still Yet to get it dualed But Thats Next on the List....Have Fun With It....If You cant accept The Rasp You Might Need To Go A diff Route For Your Exhaust.....Maybe Some Custom FLOWMASTERS.....

I dont really have any rasp with my exhaust, Ive just heard people talk about it and wondered what caused it, so Im pretty happy with the exhaust. Also, Im not a huge fan of flowmasters, sounds like a can full of marbles when you put it on a V6. If I ever decide to change the exhaust Id either make my own poor mans Nascar boom tubes or put on true duals with an Xpipe and maybe a pair of Smithy packs.

I have the rasp. It only occurs when the car is cold, however, and on mine I'm pretty sure it's the heat shields on the cats. It's really not that big of a deal to me since it only does it when cold, but I admit - it's annoying as shit.

I'm not going to do anything about it for now, since I hope to put a V8 in there. But if I end up putting another V6 in there, I'll go ahead and replace just the cats.

Actually, I have a newb question. Can I install duel exhaust with my 3.8 that would work with a 4.6 if I put one in? Or are the exhausts different? I wouldn't think so, but I don't know for sure. I only ask because yes, I do want to get rid of the rasping, but don't want to waste my money if I have to get new cats and exhaust if I'm able to get a V8 sooner than expected.
