1987 Bronco 11 front axle

I have a 1987 Ford Bronco 2 that has a large amount of play where the front axle enters the hub(both sides).Would this be a bearing issue(worn bearings) or what? I can actually move either axle 1/4-1/2 " up and down.Any help would be appreciated.
