with the 5.0(305) V-8 or the 5.7 (350) V-8 Engines Only

specifically what trannie in what year car?

1977-1981
TH-350

1982-1985
TH-700R4 or the TH-200R4

1986-1989
TH-700R4 or the TH-200R4

1990-1996
4L60E or the 4L80E

am I correct?

thanks in advance

200R4 only, as far as I know.

that was my thought too ,
i might be buying a 89 caprice with the 305 tbi V-8(5.0)Liter engine
and i was hopeing it was the 700R4.

thanks for the thought, was hoping it was the TH700R4.

does anyone know anything about this tranny?(200R4)

thanks

Aparently this isn't an indicator either. My caprice wagon has the HD package (12" drums, larger axles, huge radiator etc) and has a 200R4.

The 200R4 was the weaker of the 2 trans in stock form...but it can be made as strong as a built 700R4. The 200R4's are the transmissions that were used in the turbo Buicks..Grand National..etc.

Some info I found:
81-89 Caprice eng: all Trans: THM200R4
82-93 Caprice eng: 4.3, 5.0, 5.7 Trans: THM700R4

There is a transmission ID guide here: http://hotrodders.com/showthread.php?t=30771

i have a 93 wagon with the th 200 and through my reserach its the best of the lot becuase it geared lower than both the 300 and the 400 and it overdrive gear is hire better fuel consuption when cruising the only problem is finding aftermarket suupport its also said that the 4L60E and the 4L80E are both modified versions of the th700

Caprice/Impala with 350-cid V-8 was teamed with the 700R4 in 1983 and retained that until 1990 when it was upgraded to the 4L60 (the 700R4 was renamed 4L60) and retained that until 1994 when it was upgraded to the 4L60E (electronically controlled version of the 4L60).

Caprice/Impala with 262-cid V-6 came with 700R4 in 1986 and retained that until the end of the 262-cid after 1990.

Caprice with 305-cid V-8 came with 200R4 in 1989 and retained that until 1991 when it received the 4L60. Retained that until 1994 when it was upgraded to the 4L60E.

Hope straightens everything out.
