Can anybody tell me if it is possible to change the brake pads with just normal trunk tools and how much time it would take?
Thanks

by now you ve prolly tried but other than a large c clamp you should be ok. monte carlos are pretty easy since they have regular bolts to take off caliper not torques or hex. good luck

hey i also have a 96, if youre changing rear pads... forget it. you need a special tool that is expansive to buy. i bought one because i love tools, but its ont worth it if ull only use it once. its a square socket. you have to push your calipers back in on the front but in the rear u have to screw them. good luck, any more ?'s id be glad to help. later

obad, im not questioning your post but in the haynes guide they have needle nose pliers in the slots to turn them in. just wondering if i ever have to tackle the back breaks. i never had to change rear brakes in my life , but good to know.

There are several tricks you can use to get out of buying special tools. Some of the MC's have Torque's bits in the rear Disc caliper, used for rear brake adjustment. You have to screw them back in because the Parking brake, when applied, turns this screw to adjust the "resting state" gap. You can use Needle nose pliers or a large flathead screwdriver/prybar instead of buying this expencive bit.

I bought the special sqaure tool for $8.99 at car quest. for as little as you need to use it, who cares if it's a cheapo.

Are you doing the front or rear? The front ones, you need a T60 torx bit for the caliper mounting brackets.Get the one in 1/2 square drive, not the cheapo in 3/8 drive.

Spray the bolts as best ya can with good penetrating lube, prior to pulling them, they can be a real b**** to break free at times.

after working on every car ive ever had by trial and error i finally went out and now every time i buy a car i spend the 12 bucks to get a haynes or chiltons guide, best thing youll ever buy.
