I recently purchase a 65 Thunderbird. I know the engine is not original. The 65 came with a 390. The block was black and the valve covers were gold. Mine is blue. Is there any way I can find out what I have?

The 65 only came with a 390 engine. It's probably a rebuilt one that was just painted blue. Take a valve cover off and see if it has a rocker arm shaft that holds all of the rockers. If it does then it belongs to the 390 family of engines. It may even have 390 embossed in the head like a small block which you can see when you take the valve cover off. The "Clevlend" 351, which I think Innes is referring to, was used in 1970

check out the VTCI (http://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.org) for some excellent information on the early birds.
