Aftermarket Headers/Exhaust

I have a 98 Sub with 5.7L and K&N FIPK. I am pondering installing Gibson stainless headers and a Magnaflow exhaust. Has anyone installed either of these or other such products and what are your thoughts.

MY 1990 chevy suburban has 370,000 miles on its never-opened 350, still giving 15 mpg at 70 with full load. But it developed an intake to head vacuum leak a few days ago and I didn't want to spend the few hundred in labor to repair.

I've ordered a smog-legal 383 stroker with aluminum heads from Performance Engine in Long Beach, CA for about $3000. Check in a few weeks to see how it turns out!

I have a 1990 350 sub with an empty catalytic converter, Gibson 24" muffler and 3" tailpipe. Good for perhaps 1/2 mpg overall, but greatly extended engine life (370,000 original miles).

If you run Gibson shortie headers through your stock Y-pipe and muffler, it may sound better but I doubt you'll gain much real power. Suggest you look for longer headers WITH their own aftermarket Y-pipe such as Edelbrock, Thorley, etc. Also would recommend coated system inside and out to reduce underhood temp and eliminate corrosion.

If you need to meet California or similar emissions there are not a lot of options fitting the above requirements for mid-year '88-'91 Suburbans. If your have 4wd Edelbrock does have a system for you!

Good Luck!

Clauritzen,

Excuuuuse me! You have a later model suburban for which many header companies make bolt-on header and Y-pipe systems. I stand by my comments above that longer headers with mandrel-bent Y-pipes and thermal coating are superior to shorties which are mostly for looks.

You're talking around $500 for these systems. If bucks are a factor your local speed shop may have suggestions to get more power for this kind of outlay than muffled headers.

Hi all, Just completely reworked my 98 K1500 Suburban's exhuast.

Summit Racing Headers, Walker Cat (direct fit) and a Gibson Catback. Added a Tornado to the K&N intake and replaced all 4 O2's with Bosch O.E. sensors.

Sounds GREAT and the gas gauge creeps down. My father in law took on the highway and reported 22mpg. Checked again because he didn't believe it. I haven't done the number crunching myself yet because the wife simply refuses to note mileage and amount of gas bought and doesn't like to wait for it to reach full. But, I had 1/4 tank Wednesday morning drove to work and ran errands for 5 days now and still have about 1/8th left in nothing but city driving. When I was getting 12mpg there is no way I could have done this.
