I was wondering if a muffler shop can take off cats and put straights on with tips coming out behind each rear wheel? If so, how much? If not, what kind of exhaust system that will fit a 1986 xlt, 302 that is pretty loud, but not obnoxious. Any input will be appreciated. thanks..

Removing a Catalytic Converter carries a $10,000 fine in my area, and probably some jail time with it. I wouldn't announce that when you walk in the door. As far as I can tell, most shops are designated "Cat-Back" which means they can put in any Cat, muffler, tips you want, but they can't do headers and such.

If your Cat. is "Severly damaged" they probably won't make you replace it, though! My buddy ran into the unfortunate situation where someone put a drill-bit through his Cat, and completely hollowed it out so it was useless...but the shop didn't make him replace it.
