More info would be very helpful, ie:

- 4x4?
- manual or automatic hubs?
- is it in 4x4?
- are the hubs locked?
- how do you know the axle won't turn?
- did you jack up the vehicle and spin the wheel?
- does the car make any wierd noises, clunking etc?

etc, etc.

davendee,

Posting to the forum directly will ensure several hundreds of eyes will see it:

it is a four wheel drive automatic tranny shift on the fly, the dealer told me he replaced them and after he put them together the weels would not spin

Well, first, I would go back, and ask him what he did. Ensure it worked beforehand though.

Perhaps he did something to the SOTF actuator. I don't have one on mine, but if it's not working, the front axles won't engage.

If you jack up the front of the truck and turn the wheel, does the halfshaft turn then? If it does, it's an engagement problem, if it doesn't, it's a hub issue. (I believe your vehicle has full-time locked hubs, but not sure).

Hopefully someone else can give you advise on how to test the SOTF...engagement noises, certain movement, electrical current etc.

Exactly as stated....jack up the front wheel, turn said wheel. If the axle does not move and the tire does, the hub may be broken.

If the wheel does turn the axle, then the problem is coming from the other end...check the SOTF.

I'm sorry, but you are going to have to clarify.

Are you saying when you spin the tire, the axle turns with it?

I don't think there is anything more I can do with the info he is providing you with. Hopefully, someone else can. This is becoming extremely confusing. (Perhaps it's just because of the type of day I'm having at work :) )

Personally, I thought you were doing these tests yourself. You may be best to take it somewhere else to get a second opinion on the matter, as a mechanic should understand where the problem lies. Not to say I'm any better, just he's physically working on the vehicle, and I am not.

If you gain any more info, feel free to post back.

Good luck!

Re-reading our thread, I feel I have had a misunderstanding the entire time...correct me if I am wrong:

I was assuming you meant the axle would not turn (as in it stayed stationary when the wheel was turned), but now I'm starting to believe that the axle is actually siezed and won't turn, but neither will the wheel.

Let me know.

I don't understand how this is your problem to figure out. If the dealer did something wrong, its their responsibility to fix it.

Can you elaborate on what was wrong, what they did to fix it?

I'm curious now as to what the actual problem really was.

there was a piece on the boot that they had tightened to much and it seized the boot, they bought a new one and that fixed the prob.
