1996 suburban noisy blower motor

My 1996 suburban 1/2 ton has a noisy blower motor. It is worse when the fan speed is low to mid. If I turn it to high, the noise goes away. The running joke by my family is that I have a hampster behind my dash running the blower motor. I haven't taken the dash apart yet. Is this a typical problem or do you think something just needs to be tightened up?
It is driving me nuts.

Hey, You mean the heater fan? I have a 95 and yes it first made a tweeting noise when on low. Now most of the time on all the fan settings. I'll watch for replys...

yep tweety sound, that's the one. I have a 96 k2500 with blower noise up under passenger feet. gets quiter when turned up. sounds sorta tweety or like a leaf stuck next to fan blades when spinning. thought about taking it apart to see if it's a casing defect. a leaf or whatever causing it but looks like i'll live with it till summer.

Same problem on my 97 Sub the front blower makes noise on low speeds. The blower bearing is going bad, I removed my blower(very easy to do) and put some lube on the bearing shaft, that lasted about 6 months

Okay, y'all, here's the thing - I have a '97 and my blower motor was doing the same thing. I know how to replace the units, it's easy, so I went up under the dash and got the unit out. When I did, a set of instructions from the assembly plant in Mexico for the dash unit fell out of the "hole".
Surely, that wasn't the cause of it right? Wrong!
I plugged the motor back in, and no squeak. Haven't had a problem since.
Just a suggestion - look for paper materials left in the dash next to the blower when you remove the motor. It's not difficult, you can do it in about an hour (in and out).
Good luck!

Yes my 1992 does the same. I hate it. But is it really easy to take apart. I was looking at mine and it looks like you have to take the whole dash board apart. What is the deal

No, Dan, that's not the case, at least with the '97 model. If you go under the front passenger side, there is a "shroud" under the glove compartment that houses the blower motor. Take off the shroud, and then there is the motor. All you have to do is unplug the motor and unscrew the screws holding the blower motor to the dash, and it pops right out. You can pick up a new blower motor at nearly any aftermarket auto parts store. Put it back like you found it, and voila! You're in business!
Replacing a blower motor is a piece of cake in nearly any vehicle - as long as you can "contort" yourself around the bends and breaks in the vehicle! Let's just say I wouldn't want to replace one in, say, a Corvette!

My 95 K1500 started doing this last winter when it got cold. I took it into the dealer to check it out, and they said "what noise?" Turns out that it sat in the warm shop all night and the noise went away. Mine has been quiet all summer. Today it dropped into the 30s in Ohio, and the noise is back.
I looked at pulling the fan last year, but the fan motor has a foam cover that looks like would be a pain to remove and reinstall. The fan motor didn't look like any picnic either. The aftermarket shop manual I have isn't much help in telling how to remove/replace the fan. Anyone know the procedure for a 1995 (which may have been the only year with this dash config -- no passenger airbag).
BTW -- I've found that if I give the fan housing a firm whack with my long-handled window scraper, the noise goes away for a while.
Just for curiousity -- any ideas why the noise happens only when it's cold (below 40F)? I'm guessing all the metal parts shrink and open up all the gaps and seams, giving the squirrel cage freedom to contact something in the housing.

Thank you for reminding me what a piece of junk that Suburban was. I left Guatemala three months ago. I only was able to sell it for about $2000 dollars after sinking almost $8,000 dollars into it the entire 16 months I was there. The guy there still owes me $1000 for it. It stranded me many times in remote regions of the country and broke my heart after being a life long Chevey fan. I bought a subaru when I got back to California. It is an amazing car in a whole different world. Get rid of your suburbans now experience the joy of a modern car. You will not be sorry.
