Hey everyone! I have question- my car is getting 20MPG and I want more out of it. How can I squeeze more miles out of it. It has 204,400 miles on it. It sat for 2 1/2 months and it became a third car until a few weeks ago. I just ran a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through and it got worse. I also have to floor it for it to take off nicely. Oil is fairly new and everything else is maintained. What can I do about this?

Your gas may be old. Do you still have the problem after you have filled it up with fresh gas?
You may need to clean the injectors more thoroughly than that.

Also the throttle body:

New air filter and plugs?

Is this a 6 cyl? They can get mileage like that, especially during cold weather and short trips. If it's a 4 cyl. yep the mileage seems low, but again, in cold weather the mileage will be less, especially if all you do are short trips.
Bring it on the highway and run it a while. Might clean it out and help.
Also, what Brian said...

no, my gas is not "old." I have kept fresh gas in it all along. It has never had old gas in it it's entire life. I was told by a mechanic today to put another bottle of injector cleaner in along with 4.5 gallons of 89 octane fuel. I had about a quarter of a tank before I put in the gas and cleaner. I did put the cleaner in first. Does this seem like a good idea to help it out? I am also taking it on a 30 miles highway trip tomorrow. Maybe that will clean it up a little with the gas and cleaner?

Maybe - maybe not. Injectors can be cleaned this way. If they are too cruddy, then you have to do a more throrough job.

Driving habits, spark plugs, air filter, engine oil, brake adjustment, tire pressure, fuel quality, terrain all have an effect on MPG. Higher mileage engines tend to use a bit more fuel.

I have recently put in 89 octane fuel to get it to 1/2 a tank. I don't have much gas left now but it seems to be running better and has more pep when taking off. Also I can tell it has an MPG increase just by knowing how many miles that amount of fuel got me. Should I keep on using 89 octane or what? I use 10-30 oil in it but the temp. here hasn't gotton past 20 in a month. Maybe the hard starts with 10-30?

I go by Wal Mart and buy a case of octane boost and use it almost every time on my larger engines. I also use fuel injector cleaner every 1000 miles or so. Fuel quality is a biggie with MPG. I live in the south so I use 10W-30 year around........you know best about cold weather. I would use 89 octane if you can afford it. Have the spark plugs changed at least every 50K miles if you want good MPG
for hard starts change the fuel filter, distributor cap, rotor cap, spark plugs and use octange boost.

My 89 2.0 automatic averages 20 mpg during the winter with mostly city driving here in Mass. I get about 25 mpg city/highway during winter and about 30 mpg city/highway during summer. Use Regane every 3k miles to decarbon, I find it works better than Techron in Camrys.

Find out what works for your engine and use it. If it is way far from normal, then use it until you can solve the problem that is making your engine require something way far from normal. 2.0 4cyl can run better on 89 octane than 87. That is not so outrageous.
You can try feeding it some top engine cleaner (GM) and get the carbon out of the combustion chambers and see if that helps. Carbon in the combustion chambers can increase your octane requirment.

I have already run some sea foam through to clean the carbon out. Spark plugs, dist, and wires are all new. Sine I started using 89 octane in it a few days ago, I saw a dramatic increase in engine power and stability (such as not shaking and stalling occasionally). It doesn't get more than 20 degrees here until March. Next time I get my oil changed, should I use 5-30?

I use 5W30 in that engine all year around.

20 degrees will make any car start harder. 20 degrees will make your battery go to sleep :)
