I’m thinking about buying a 1990 Galant from a guy I work with for my son. It’s a one owner with 80k miles, automatic, 2.0L. Are there any big problems with these cars that I should look for?

Has it got a full service record/history?

Get it fully checked out professionally with compression test. The test drive it around to a transmission specialist and get them to test the transmission. Great cars. But parts are expensive. That's why get it checked out.

Thanks for the help. He got the car with 10k miles on it and he is asking $1700. He said only normal maintenance has been done. No major repairs. What do you think?

If it has had regular servicing, i.e. oil and filter changes every 10,000kms/6 months it should be ok. I'd get it tested by a mechanic first. Many shops offer a fixed price vehicle inspection service that includes compression test, road test for gear box, etc. Anything majorly wrong, they should find it. It will need its cambelt replaced at 100,000kms and should also have had a gearbox fluid change previously or soon.

I have a '94 Galant 2.0 SOHC (the low budget model) Auto with 165,000kms on it. It has been regularly serviced (oil and filter changes + cambelt at 100,000kms) and runs like a top. Compression test is great and gearbox no issues.

We also have a '97 Legnum (aka Galant) 1.8L GDI auto/tiptronic with 145,000kms on her. We have to drive it alot harder than the Galant 2.0. The Galant seems quite economical and much peppier than the younger Legnum.
