I was wondering if the 3.8 might be better with a thicker oil as the engine ages. maby 10w 30 instead of 5w 30 at about 280000kms
no addititves just some good high milage oil- any opinions
is changing your oil to often a bad thing? I was thinking if you did an oil change to offten 3000kms the engine would be to clean. Removing all deposites around seals that keep them sealed. maby the every 7000 kms is better? dont know? just asking?

There are a number of "high mileage" oils out there.
Main thing is.....to ask.....Is my car "using" a too much oil? If not.....then a heavier weight oil just because there are lots of miles on the odometer does not make sense.

Mobil 1 5W-30 is on the "light" side of the 30 weight rating. If you see more consumption with the 5W-30......I would try a 5W-40......but ONLY with a synthetic.... A "conventional" (non-synthetic) oil has too many additives to give the wide spread in viscosity numbers.......and suffers for it.
In winter....I would stick with the 5W rating...as it will provide much better protection at startup.
I am not big at all on oil additives.....often...they clash with the additives that are already in the oil....and cause additional problems.

Changing oil every 3000 MILES (farther than kms) is not going to harm the engine.....costs more.......The Mobil 1 oil is rated.....and I have read.....does very well with extended oil change intervals of up to 10,000 miles.....though...I do not wish to go that long.....

I have gone 6000 miles between a change.....and did not need to add any oil in that time. At 3000 I am still at FULL. That is, I think very good. If you are not using more than a quart in 3000 miles....you have NO problem. Just where one would say....the line is... between not a problem.....and....too much oil usage......I do not know. I guess part of the answer would be in where the oil has gone.

Again....these are just my opinions....and I am no expert.
