Miles Per Gallon

Picked up a 2005 PT in Vero Beach FL., Drove up to Long Island NY now has 2000 miles. With each fill up the Miles per gallon drops, now down to 12 MPG? Dropped the car off at the dealer this AM. Am I the only one who has this problem??

My 2004 gets 30 MPG or so, and always has. Doesnt sound good.:frown:

I have an 05 5speed I get 31-36 on hwy on a trip and hold right at 28 around town. Hve never gotten below 26 in town.

I get about 26 mpg (US gallons) dring no faster than 65 on the freeway. Gas mileage has a lot to do with how hard you push the gas pedal and the tire pressure

Any trouble codes (engine light)? Tires properly inflated? What are the revs on the highway; maybe it's not going into overdrive.......
Make sure you don't have drag from the brakes (if you did you'd notice the smell pretty soon, I'd think). Maybe you've got a 28ft house trailer attached - lol! :rofl:

If there's no mechanical problem, you should be doing a hell of a lot better than 12mpg.

That being said, driving habits DO affect the mileage greatly. I average 26mpg and my brakes last 60K miles or better. My wife will drive the same car and get 21-22mpg and for some reason she wears out the brakes and tires a lot faster too. :shakehead

Hi win_daddy - you made me laugh. When my wife drives my PT the gas mileage plummets. Because of high gas prices I have slowed down a bit and am now getting 29mpg (US) / 35 mpg (Cdn) when not running the a/c.

As a point of interest my wife took the car for a 200 mile trek and filled it back up for me........17mpg on that tank :frown:

I have had the exact experience as smc1243 and I attribute it to the fact that the Cruiser is very sensitive to how it is driven. I have a 2006 with auto transmission and my wife gets 14-16. When I drive in heavy commute traffic, I get around 22. Out on the highway at 70 I get about 24. If I slow to 65, I get around 27, but if I slow to around 55, it ges up to about 33mpg.

The trick to good mileage is to hold a constant pressure on the gas pedal and be sure you are going about the slowest you can go while still keeping the car in the highest gear. Mine seems to like about 2000 rpm.
