Shocks--Best ones for Tahoe?

I have a 98 4X4 Tahoe. You know how heavy Tahoe's are. What is a really good front shock?

I have the rancho 5000s i like the way they ride, but it is very trucky.

KYB MONO MAX, best thing I did for my tahoe for ride and control, plus they do not beat the s&^* out of you like the RANCHOS do.

Rancho 5000 front/back. I recently did the backs at 113K miles. I was "shocked" when I pulled out Bilstiens (factory). If I knew, I probably would have NOT replaced them. Now I glad I did ... nice tight ride. Even the wife commented about tighter steering response.

$80 for pair at Kragen online. Sure beats the $200 Bilstein I just put on Porsche. Yes, I did check to see if Rancho made ones for the Porsche...

Anyone try Monroe "Reflex" shocks?

Anyone try Monroe "Reflex" shocks? I have a 2002 Yukon and want to upgrade the front and back shocks. The back factory self-adjusting squeek and the front seem to allow a lot the body roll while cornering.

Remember when you first got that unit new. It rode nice and smooth and handled nice..Thats one of the reasons you bought it. There's your answer.....factory OEM shocks. I made the mistake of getting after market shocks once and ended up with a "lumber wagon". Wasn't long after I shelled out the extra bucks for the original equipment. Thats' my two cents on the subject for all it's worth.

If You Need To Stay In The Budget The Reflex Is A Good Shock

The Rancho 5000's Are Good, If You Are Looking For An Off Road Shock, For The All Around, Go With Kyb Or Reflex.

Anyone try Monroe "Reflex" shocks?


I put them on my 03 Yukon the originals had 45K, seem to be a little softer in rear. The size of the reflex was smaller than the OE's in the rear,, same up front. Tires are Mich. Cross Terains

Hey Pinnacle, have you tried the Reflexes yet? I have a 2002 Yukon and was considering putting Reflexes on it...My OEM's are mushy in the rear and I was thinking of changing all four out at once. I want a little more stiffness on cornering. I've also been thinking about changing sway bars but can't seem to find much on that except from those who raise or lower the ride height too.

Rancho RSX- great control, good ride, a touch stiff, but a great overall solution which is also affordable. The OEM's from the dealer were way overpriced.

I can believe it. I replaced rears on 1997 Tahoe and found factory shocks were BILSTEIN (kinda skinny though compared to the Rancho 5000).

Bilsteins are expensive even discounted online (www.shox.com). My Bilstein HD rears on Porsche were about $200 while Rancho's for Tahoe were $80 (pr.) and basically same size.

I found that Auto Zone sold the Bilsteins at a greatly reduced price compared to the OEM. I bought the Biltein HD's for about $58 a pair. I am very happy with them. The OEM Bilsteins were pretty tired at about 125K mi.

They did offer a Bilstein Comfort Ride also, about $8 more I think, but I was worried there would be too much body roll for a full loaded rig pulling a trailer. He did say those were probably a little closer to the OEM ride.

sprucegoose, good find. I now have AutoZone plugged into my parts search. For 1997 Tahoe it shows $59 each, I assume yr $58 was each also.

Ooops... my bad! Thanks for correcting me. I knew my memory wasn't getting any better, but that's pretty bad. My excuse... it was almost 2 years ago now! :D

I just looked up my reciept and it was 54.99 each. Part number B46-2178 and B46-2179. Not sure which is front or rear...

I have Edelbrock IAS on the front of my '99, original Bilsteins on the rear.
They made a noticable difference in handling, although a stiffer sway bar would probably be the best way to go for controlling body roll.
