Hi. I was wondering if anyone coolud tell me where the EGR valve is in the 95 Windstar and if its possible to replace it yourself. Also How much would a new ERG valve cost and coould i get it at a place like pepboys? Thanks!

I have a '96 windstar which is somewhat different than yours. You will need to know if you have the 3.0L or the 3.8L engine.

Go to www.autozone.com for vehicle specific repair information. They give step by step instructions on how to do many repairs.....including replacement of the EGR valve.

The EGR valve on my '96 (and I will guess yours will be similar...but not the same) is located under the throttle body. It is on the side of the lower intake manifold (the intake manifold is in 2 parts, an UPPER and a LOWER). There will be a metal pipe going from the bottom of the front exhaust manifold to the EGR valve.

On the Windstar, the EGR valve is not a real high failure item....that is not to say that it does not fail...but there are other things that can fail....that are in the same operation.
Other things to check.
1. EGR port(s) in the intake....they tend to become clogged.
2. DPFE (Differential Pressure Feedback) This is what measures the actual EGR flow. There are 2 hoses that go from the EGR pipe (The Pipe that goes from the base of the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve) to this unit. It is mounted kind of in front of the EGR valve as you view your engine from in front of the car. These fail quite often.
3. The vacuum hose that goes from the EGR vacuum solonoid to the EGR valve. Make sure that this has not come off.....as this is what opens the EGR valve.

To loosten rusted bolts and nuts (as the EGR valve ones will be), I would spray a little PB Blaster on them.....and let it soak for a few hours. Just a little to soak into the threads is all you need.
Don't over do it and get it all over hot parts of your car (like the exhaust manifold).

Check out the FREE instructions at Autozone's website. Also..... you can check their website for the part for your car.

Another website is www.partsamerica.com
They own Checker, Advance, and several other auto part stores. You can check to see if they have it in stock at the stores near you. That has saved me a LOT of time running from store to store trying to locate my parts.

Pep boys has a website also.... http://www.pepboys.com/

I do not have Pepboys store near me....so I have not shopped them.

We had a '95 Windstar, 3.8 Liter. When ours was giving EGR codes, the problem was the DPFE, not the EGR valve. The EGR valve is on the drivers side of the manifold, towards the back. You'll see an exhaust line going from it down to the rear exhaust pipe. The DPFE is near it.

On the '95 3.8 liter, the EGR valve should not be active when the engine is at idle. Apply a vacuum signal to the EGR with the engine idling. If the valve works, the engine will bog down, maybe even die. If that happens, the valve is opening and a large amount of exhaust gas is being introduced to the intake manifold. It only takes a few inches of vacuum to open the valve. I performed this test on ours, and ended up replacing the DPFE. Cost was $40'ish, and not real difficult. Just be sure and label the hoses so you don't swap them.

The EGR valve can be replaced by an average mechanic too. Just give yourself plenty of time with the best penetrant oil you can find. There is not much room under there to get any leverage on a wrench.

We've graduated to a 2003 Windstar now, so I'll be learning things all over again.

Hope this helps.
