Brake Lights Stay On

01 Windstar SLE, recently I noticed after I park and the car is turned off, the brake lights will remain on. This has caused numerous dead battery issues. If I remember after I park to pull the brake pedal out with my foot several times the lights will go off and everything is fine. However I forget to do this and am left holding the jumper cables.

Any Ideas is there a screw or some type of swicth that is causing the brake pedal not to fully reset. This van has the pedal adjustment feature I have adjustd several times wondering if that is the problem but doesn't help.

thanks for your suggestions

It may be your brake pedal bushings are worn, but you may need to add some fluid to the system, too. Otherwise, the Power Brake Booster may need to be replaced, since the pedal directly engages the booster.

You want to check the brake pedal position switch. Its down there with the brake pedal hardware. Usually there is some adjustment in the switch mtg screw.

Ford had problems with the internal circuitry of the stop lamp switch or some may call it a brake light switch or "BOO" (brake on/off switch). .... at any rate replacing this switch will more than likely solve your problem. I've replaced hundreds of these switches in the Windstar and Taurus especially when I worked at the dealership.
