I'm gonna have to go with the C6 Corvette. The bang-for-buck was already incredible on the previous model, but the chassis and interior were pretty bad. Now, the Corvette is perhaps the best overall value the automotive world has seen in the last 20 years. And this is coming from a staunch Japanese import guy.

i am going to go with the F-430 here. i love the styling of it and the performance of it is so amazing. it is a huge step up in performance, technology, and styling than the modena, and it only costs $20k more. good job ferrari.

The Carrera GT is the one for me.
It not only ticks every single box a hypercar should tick, but also doesn't score any less than a 9 in any of them imo.

Tough choice.
I think im going to vote for the one I think is the most revolutionary/influential in the car community.
05' Mustang-
I absolutely dispised all of the fox body stangs. They were simply hideous. In my mind the Mustang truly ended in 1969, until now. 300bhp out of a $25,000 car is awesome, and it looks like a Mustang should look like. This is America doing what it does best. V8, front engine, RWD car that costs substantially less then the competition. If I didn't have my M3 and had a smaller budget, I might consider a car like this one. Im pretty sure this is the first Mustang to ever grace C&D's Ten Best Cars list ever. This is the most attainable car on the list. You will see five of these cars (including the V6) for every other car on the list you see. It isn't perfect, and I'm not a big fan of the live rear axle, but this is Ford getting back on track.

yeah, i voted for the stang for this one reason: by far the biggest improvement over the car it replaces. it may not be my favorite car on the list, nor would it be on my list of top choices of cars to buy but the GT finally has 300hp from the factory, which it should have had when the f bodies from GM still existed. i'm hearing rumours of the new cobra havin 465hp. again, just rumors. i just didn't care for the mustangs 92-04 bodystyle. the new retro look may be a fad, but ford did a good job with the mustang. and the GT i might add. it'd be too easy to choose a ferrari F430 or a porche carrera GT. theyr'e awesome cars and i would certainly have one before the mustang, but i have to give ford this one.

I was tempted to vote for the C5 Z06 with it being the one that really got the ball rolling and opened a lot of eyes towards Corvette performance.
But yet I voted for the C6 because it is an improvement on the C5 Z06 in practically everyway and it is less expensive.
With the release of the C6, the Corvette has evolved into one hell of a weapon and has the potential to become even greater in the years to come.
Well done to the team at Corvette Engineering. (What would Chevrolet do without you?)

well I would not call the C6 as a complete improvement over the C5 Z06. It is certainly over the regular C5 but except for the interior it is not really superior over the Z06.
The Z06 virtually matches the C6 for power and it outhandles it even with the ZR1(did i get that name right) suspension package.
I think we'll have to wait till the C6 Z06 to see a complete improvement over the C5 Z06.
Another thing that bothers me a bit about the C6 is the displacement increase. That 350 small block is the first thing that comes in mind when i think of Chevy.

(did i get that name right)
Nearly. It’s the Z51 suspension package.
ZR1 was the code name designation for the Lotus engine Corvette made between 1991 – 1995. Still it can get quite confusing with all the Z’s being used all over the place.
They use Z to pay homage to Zora Arkus Duntov who was the chief engineer of the Corvette between 1955 – 1978 and credited for making the Corvette a success.
I think we'll have to wait till the C6 Z06 to see a complete improvement over the C5 Z06.
It should be quite interesting.
I wonder if it will use the same engine as in the base C6 or something new.

I really wouldn’t be too worried about the LS2 being a 6L. Its only 0.3 of a litre bigger so you can still sort of consider it a small block.
Certainly in the past their had been far more drastic changes proposed that nearly got the green light.
In fact in the late 60’s / early 70’s they made a prototype Corvette that was to succeed the C3. They called it the Aerovette, and it was a mid engine sports car powered by a 4 rotor Wankel engine.
After watching Mazda nearly go broke when the 1973 oil embargo occurred, Chevy canned the Aerovette project and continued to make the C3 for a few more years.

thanks for the info Vettributionn and yes you are right they seem to use a lot of Z's but i never know the reason. Its kind of cool how they pay tribute than engineer.
And i remember that ZR1 engine it was basically a 350 with DOHC heads with about 400hp. One heck of an engine but if i remember corectly it was not very successfull. Why was that was it too expensive or was it unreliable?
BTW they have a pic of a test mule C6 Z06 in the latest motors threand but its only an ealy version, it has much fatter tires for one since they had to stick some fender extenders on the C6 body. I'm sure on the final production model the fenders will be nice and rolled to accomodate the extra rubber. It should look quite muscular, gotta love that rolled fender look. About the engine my guess is an LS2 with a better flowing head and maybe higher comp pistons.

As Polygon told me, "Lotus is known for their quality suspensions, not headers." The motor was fairly problematic, as was the 2.2L Turbo III designed by Lotus that was used in the Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo and Dodge Spirit R/T.

yes I while I wa writing that i was remembering the problems the lotus heads had on the 2.2 chrysler common block. It seems they like to snap timing belts. But i wasn't sure how they did with the vette engine.

The ZR1's engine (code named LT5) was a more expensive engine to produce as it incorporated the uses of forged steel rather then cast in the internals. It was also a heavy and bulky engine (it barely fit into a C4's engine bay) that had a complicated DOHC system.
At the time of the ZR1 Chevrolet simply didn’t have the facilities to build such a unique engine and so they had the engine constructed by Mercury Marine in Oklahoma. They could only produce a handful of engines a day, as it was a complicated engine to procure.
The chief of engineering at the time wanted to make all Corvettes have the LT5 engines but it was simply not possible as the inclusion of the ZR1 package increased the price of the car by almost double which would have priced them out of the market.
Initial demand of the car was high but soon tailed off. Still around 33,000 ZR1s had been made from 1991 to 1995, when the LS1 was proven to be a better engine and was earmarked for the C5 2 years later.
The Gen II and Gen III engines where made what they are now due to the jealousy of some of the Corvette engineers towards Lotus. When management decided that the next engine after the L98 would be designed by Lotus, the Corvette engine team thought, "Why didn’t they pick us? We can do it. Lets show them what were made of".
There are still a few ZR1s around and they are famous for being the best sounding Corvette ever built.

I voted for the Ford GT what can I say i'm a Ford guy, but the F430 would of being my second choice then the '05 Mustang. The Ford GT and the F430 are great looking cars the GT is faster but the F430 is very well priced for a Ferrari and all the performance you get.

The Carrera GT is the one for me.
It not only ticks every single box a hypercar should tick, but also doesn't score any less than a 9 in any of them imo.
I definitely agree although i would take any one of the cars we voted on but i think the porsche careera is my favorite. All the competitors are very worthy though

I don't see how you guys can vote for just one car! This is very hard. From the list provided I first tried to narrow it down (as hard as it is) to just two cars. The Carrera GT, and the C6. Not only have these two pushed the envelope as well as the rest, I simply like them better! so :p . But in the end my decision was overtaken by my overwhelming passion and love of the Corvette. Nothing against the Carrera, but the Corvette is not only a great car that has always been great, but I can actually afford one!!!!

Agreed. I voted for the C6 Corvette because I'm looking forward to being able to actually afford one in 6-7 years. And the 2005 Mustang is a great car for the money that I could potentially buy right now (although not a V8). As cool as the Carrera GT and F430 are, it's hard to call them 'best cars' when they only cater to a very select group of people.

A valid point. Chevy would spend more on its Vette as it is the performance flagship of the company.
Ford on the other hand uses the Mustang platform to cover a broader target audience. On one end there is the V6 Mustang for those who simply want a trendy 2 seater. And on the other is the Mustang Cobra for those who are more hardcore about performance.
Ford not only has the Mustang to worry about but also the Ford GT. It seems excusable to me that they don’t have a Corvette equivalent as they have offerings invested in the market above the Vette (Ford GT) and below (Mustang) so there’s no need really for Ford to make a move against the Vette.
About the C5 Corvette though, Chevy didn’t spend a great deal of money developing it. $250 million I believe was the total cost when the average spent by most companies was $750 million (Ford spent around $2 billion redesigning the Taurus). However I don’t know how much the C6 cost to develop.

WTF?!? i dunno what you are talking about the the '04 sti looked pretty bad ass, and subaru had more flywheel tq and hp than the EVO 8 (which isn't really called the evo 8 but w/e), the 04 sti was pushing 300hp and 300tq but the evo was only pushing 271hp 273tq (which was closer to 290hp and 290-300tq but w/e it is mitsu's right to under claim) but anyways and the 04 sti came with a 6-speed, u have to go to buy a ralli-art and buy the 6-spd dog box for the evo. My point isn't that the sti is better but truthfuly it is damn close between the twoi wud rather have the evo to but you should give subaru props cause they're damn close!http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/2cents.gif

I'm going with the EVO, I mean WOW, you get that car for that cheap! I'll take two! Kudos to Mitsubishi on that one!I agree, for these two family 4 door sedans (EVO & STi) to even be in the same class as Ferrari, Carrera, Viper SRT, and such it really says something! Now if the FQ-400 ever came across the pond I’d probably wouldn’t even be a Honda man anymore.

Well guys, I gotta go with the good 'ol Viper on this one.
That car really does something for me.
In my opinion, it's got the most potential of them all and comes close to taking best overall exterior looks. The improvements on handling have been remarkable. I just love seeing over 500 cubic inches in a small 2 door coupe!!! Throw a blower or turbo on it and now were talking atleast 600+ to the wheel, if you go modest!

I gotta go with the Mustang GT bias aside. 300hp for 25k in a rwd coupe that has this much poise and polish. Every other auto maker should take notes.

So they represent you fellow member's choices for the cars produced in 2004.

Im goin with the 05 mustangs , Ford vowed to make a best bang for your buck stang that provides Excellent power and lots of fun toys inside. This is going to be the car to have this summer for N/A car fans and the line ups in the showrooms prove that its been a long awaited change. Ford did well in keeping the price the same as last years only theres more bang for your buck. :)

ok let me see if i can type what is going on in my head...
vettes and stangs are no doubt a great deal...but to me, when i think "BEST" car of the year. i think something almost out of reach...no car manufacturers are matching the car let alone beating it. yes i know, your gonna say well there is no better performance in the price range of those two. but there is more to the "best" car than the price...no matter what the price, the "best" car of the year should be near flawless...and i dont feel the "great buy" cars car cutting it. but that is all opinionated...obviously.
now you can go ahead...let me have an ear full...

I was expecting you to bash domestics, but now I see your point. I disagree, however, because such cars as the Ferrari F430 and Porsche Carrera GT are so expensive that 99% of drivers will never have a chance to own one, thus making the vehicle rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The Mustang GT, on the other hand, has set a whole new standard in "bang-for-buck". Everyone went apeshit in 2004 when the STi offered 300 horsepower for $32,000; now you can get it for $25,000. The Corvette consistently beats cars that cost twice as much as it does; nothing more to say there.

yes that is all very true. and i have nothing against vettes or stangs...well i dont care for the styling of neither too much but thats a whole other ball game. i have no beef with domestics and i also see what your saying about the high price range cars being insignificant. but to me, that is part of the whole "best" car nature. to me the best car of the year has all qualitites in the 9-10 out of 10 range across the board but is still almost unattainable. yes vettes and stangs are great cars and definitely a great bang for the buck but almost anyone can go have one if they wanted, almost leaving it as normal thing. yes that is good in a sense but in another sense, it is bad. when i see a vette or mustang i dont think twice because i see them everywhere, mainly because of the price tag. but if a ferrari f430 or porsche carrera gt were to fly by me. i would probably stare at it until i could no longer see it...i think that adds to the whole BEST car of the year. but thats just me...i can totally see where your coming from also. :dunno:

Well, it doesn't much matter how good a car is when it's flying by you, it matters when you're the one driving it. If anyone could have any car, then there would be no need for the Mustang and the Corvette, and everyone would drive exotic supercars, but that isn't the case. I agree that the Carrera GT is a godly car with a godly price, but I don't think that's as good as a great car with an infinitely more attainable status.
