If memory serves me correct the 327 fuel injected engine was dropped in 65'. The 327 carbed versions of the time were more reliable and just as powerful, while costing about $500 less. That and the introduction of the 396 long block in 65' made the fulie even more unjustifiable.

But I would still agree with vr4 on this that the ZL1 would make away with this match.

On second note:

Wheres the L-88! Thats what I wanna see. Some humor: When the 67' Stingray was offered with the L-88 it came with a warning label saying:

Vehicle must operate on fuel having a minimum of 103 research octane and 95 motor octane or engine damage may result.

Now thats what you called an engine tuned with performance in mind!

The 69 Camaro SS didn't come with a ZL-1, the only way to get the ZL-1 on a 69 Camaro was to get COPO (central office porduction order) Camaro, or get a Yenko or Berger car. There is no 67 fuel injected Corvette and I believe that all of the 427 Corvettes would beat the 396 SS, the L36 had 390bhp, the L68 had 400bhp, the L71 had 435bhp, and the L88 was rated at 430bhp, but dyno testing has proven the motor to produce well over 500bhp. The L78 and L89 Camaros both made 375bhp, but the difference is the L89 had aluminum heads. So the winner is going to be the 67 427 powered Corvettes.

I'd guess Corvette just on principle alone, I can't see Chevy designing a Camaro that was faster than the Corvette in the quarter mile.

maybe your right, but i got my info from this.
so if indeed your right, and the maro did not come with the ZL1
then yes the corvette 427 is the winner.

i'm not much of a muscle car guy, so thanks on the info.......if indeed correct

A 1969 Camaro could be ordered with a ZL-1 but it had to be a COPO car, they were not regular production Camaros and there were only 69 made. There were no Camaro Super Sports (SS) made with the ZL-1.

The ZL-1 powerplant was an all aluminum 427 race motor that found its way into 2 Corvettes, 11 Chevelles, and 69 Camaros. It was a hyper expensive option that cost more than the car itself and you had to go through miles of red tape to get it.

The "regular" 427's were iron block, and some (like the L88 option) had aluminum heads. On the SS Camaro in 1969, the biggest engine you could get was a 396, but some of the dealerships special ordered iron 427's which produced the COPO cars, in particular the Yenkos, Danas, Baldwin-Motions, and Bergers.

I don't know about that.

Yes, there were COPO and ZL-1 Chevelles. They've been difficult to document (especially considering they were built off of the lower cost 2 door sedan model, recognizable by its roof pillars) but they are out there.

There are also about 35 surviving 1969 Yenko 427 Chevelles. As the Chevelles didn't have the popularity of the Camaros, they've fallen by the wayside and have only recently begun to resurface. Unfortunately, without good documentation it's difficult to establish the clones from the survivors.

Of equally fun note is the rarely mentioned but hellaciously quick Baldwin-Motion Phase III 1973 Chevelle which dumped the smog-strangled 454 for an L88 spec 427!

I'd be interested to learn more about these ZL1 chevelles, I've never heard anything about them. If you want to check out a badass L72 (also a 427) car, check out the '69 Yenko 427 Nova. It's one of my personal favorites. Also, did you know GM made three fastback novas in '63?

Always neat to see the mutations that came out of the Chevy back door like that fastback Chevy II, even though it looks so much like an AMC Marlin.

GM tried out so much stuff in the 60's that it's hard to keep track. I mean, you could write one helluva book based on the compacts from 1961 to 1964. Unibody coupes and sedans with aluminum 215ci V8's and rear mounted transmission/transaxle assemblies that were offered with available turbochargers?!?!?!? And of course Chevy couldn't just follow BOP, they needed an air cooled flat-six powered rear engined coupe/sedan/convertible/station wagon/truck/van!

It almost makes the Nova seem disappointing when you think about how adventurous GM was in those days.

Hey, do you have a link or something about those ZL-1 chevelles? Where did you hear about them?

I've searched around the web, and no links unfortunately. I'd read about the ZL1 Chevelles in a Muscle Car Review article about "The Other COPO's". Wish the magazine was still in print.
