ok this is strange as hell... first it did it when i was on a 4 lane road. i was sitting at the red light and light turned green so i hit the gas and it starts going but than just slows back down with like no power and so i hit brakes to maybe think it got stuck inbetween gears(automatic tranny) or something and than floor it and still no power than all of a sudden out of nowhere its like it regains all its power plus some and starts taking off bad outta hell and i had to slam on brakes to keep from ass ending car in front of me or getting speeding ticket....then the next time i was going down the interstate/highway with foot on gas going to speed limit and than all of a sudden i feel the car just act dead(still runing but no power) and it makes me end up slowing way down and people behind me hit brakes than fly around me giving me dirty look... so i push in brakes once again thinking it got stuck between gears or something and then floor it trying to see if it'd regain its power and sure enough it acted dead again than again regained its power and took off speeding again and i had to hit brakes to keep from getting speeding ticket cuz cop was right next to me by this time....well anyways my question is, what is going on and why is it doing this!?

If it is not transmission:
- general maintenance done ok? - Check open/clean all wiring connectors of oxidation. Could be some sensor wire disconnecting as engine vibrates...
- Throttle pos sensor (even new one!) ...erratic idle plus whatever. --> Change.
- Faulty sensors: Mass airflow meter?

- Maxima engines have a 'safe-mode' for example when ECU does not detect all sensors working properly or if transmission drops off to N while driving. In this mode RPM will not exceed 2500 and car behaves like transmission is about dead.
- Surely the ECU has an error code? It might even point you the fault source.

bump thanx i guess i'll call my local nissan dealer 2moro and ask how much they would charge for a diagnostic test and set up an appointment to get it looked at and then whenever they find whatevers all wrong i'll get estimate and either have em fix it or save up for awhile till i have enough money to pay for it....either way its gonna be expensive as fuck i know, lol..damn cars and their expensive ass parts, ..might only be $500 to get it all straighten out or whatever but thats still pretty expensive, especially since im only 18 and dont make that much money....oh well

- Diag should not be more than one hour charge. If it is, change shop.

- Opening, cleaning wiring connectors one by one does not need engineering skills, or that you really know smtg about electricity or the system you work on. Learn to clean off all oxidation; this is smtg that workshops usually do not do and means crap idle&accel. Afraid to break smtg? Yes, surely I do quite often, most often the first time, but still it pays...

I once as a teen paid all my money for a 'repair' in a workshop that almost cost my life. Then had to take a loan to get that 'repair' repaired. I said to myself: I can also destroy my car, and that is free! After that I've done all myself, destroying a lot, but still its cheaper.

The dark side is: always dark under fingernails...

- Your problem is intermittent [terriblese] and might not be 'on' the day you go to workshop [=time consuming to find out]. Sometimes cheaper just to swap items. Intermittent probl fits [also] to TPS Throttle pos sensor and is somewhere 90$, one hour job. Others are more expensive.

- Nissan dealer is the most expensive place, sometimes worth it but not always - they're not always even interested of old models and empty pockets (which itself is no sin). Find out a good tune up place (seek recommendations), and second opinions before shelling out big money like 500$ or more... Even paying to some car mechanic friend to come with you will surely be cost effective.

This happened to mine. I changed the air filter and it seemed to be fine...until the car stopped running. I was at a stop sign, hit the gas and nothing. Not sure if it is transmission or axel but engine ran fine but no gears worked. Look for my post for this.
