I have a 96 Windstar that last summer while still under the extended warranty, I was having trans problems. The van would appear to be missing out while changing speeds on interstate driving and also the washboard feeling like going over a rumble strip. I took the van to the local Ford dealer. The warranty co. would only cover parts and labor if after the trans was removed and disasembled to determine coverage. I did not want to commit to the expense of removal and possible replacement only to find I have to bear all the cost. A mechanic at the used car lot I purchased the van at, said it just sounds like you need to change trans fluild. So I had the fluid changed and problem solved, til now and symptoms have returned. When checking trans fluid level I can feel small prticles of dirt or metal. The van has 110,000 miles. I change oil regularly. I plan on going to Florida in Dec. Will changing the trans fluid help? Are there any fluids or addititives recommended to revive the trans or am I doomed to problems? Whould you chance of driving 2000 mile after fluid change? Any sugestions would be appreicated.

Can't hurt, worth a try, I have seen several minor shifting quirks go away with fluid change. Be sure to drop pan and change filter, use a full or semi synthetic fluid. I wouldn't go on the trip unless its running right.
