One tip that has helped me drasticly, keep looking forward. Start out in your daily driving by looking as far up the road as you can, not at whats right in front of you. When you get used to this it will be habbit, it will help you plan your line a little more. Also heel toe shifting will help get you out of those sharp turns, if you havent gotten that down thats something else to work on. Also ask around to other people who are running good times, usually a lot of them have good tips they use and will be more than happy to help out the new person. Hope i could help!

first off, welcome to the world of AutoX and other forms of solo racing.
work a lot on your 1-2 shift, most autoX's can be run in 2nd gear. and with a flat torque curve like your FC has, you'll be in even power from 4000 -8500 rpm.
the big thing is seat time, get as much as you can.

the way i got heel toe shifting down is for about a week i did it on every turn when i was riding through town, no matter what i was doing, no matter if i was turning past a cop car, i just heel toed it, usually i just did it into a low gear but its just the practice. after a while youll just be like WAIT I GOT IT!

I heel-toe every down shift that requires braking... every turn...
With my old motor and transmission, I had too cause my tranny had terrible syncros and wouldn't let you downshift without a hell of a lot of rev matching. Now with the new motor, It's habbit to heel-toe constantly.
Since my car has a slight vacuum leak it likes to die when you come to a stop, so I'm constantly tapping the gas as with my foot on the brake to keep it running.
Nobody else can drive the car, they don't know how to keep it running.

Just remember that autocross is about 80% driver and about 20% car.
Spend a lot of time on fine tuning your suspension, power isnt everything on an auto-x course, your never going to be going full speed in 5th gear so get your suspension tuned up to where your comfortable with it.
Also remember the first few times you go out there, your gonna probably do horrible. Just dont worry about doing great runs the first few times. Oh and also find someone who is pretty experienced and get them to walk the course with you a couple times, once you get used to what to look for when you walk the course it makes running the course easier....
and if you have a horrible run you can do what one guy did. do donuts in the middle of the course and mow down most of the cones...bastard lol

80 driver... 20 car?
nooo....
it's 70% driver 20% car 5% tires and 5% CRAZY MOJO!
don't do doughnuts on course... you'll be politly asked to never return.
but autocrossers are a friendly group, usually willing to share info.
sticky tires will take more time off for the money you spend...

there are few college hotties here in AZ, who drive their parent georgous cars. AZ is by far the best state for hottie's who drive equally hot cars!

snow is the best thing in the world!!!! alright this is what if you do, when it does "snow" (in nothern az anyways) you find a big ass parking lot... like a costco lot will do, and u get in the midde. since im a front wheel drive car i put my car in reverse, but then u crank the wheel to one side, and hit the gas!!! round, and round u go. it is also good stuff to practice difting, i have to use my e-brake though

Say I had an automatic in my car...can I still be competitive in auto-x?
drdisque
11-23-2004, 04:19 AM
competetive is very vague and is determined by your class and location.
I have seen some very fast drivers in automatics, you'll definitely want to turn overdrive off though.

Jabberwocky
11-24-2004, 09:26 AM
Yes, you can. The differences between different drivers are usually whole seconds. An auto may slow you down maybe less than 1/10th of a second. If you lose, dont blame your car.
ac427cpe
11-24-2004, 10:32 AM
it depends on how you mean "competative"

I found walking the course helps a lot. I get to the site early and walk a few times. Then during the lunch break, my buddy and I walk it 2 more times. Then we go out and lay rubber through out the course :D

12-16-2004, 08:48 AM
just be careful that you don't walk it too much... if you get the course in your head at low (walking speeds) it WILL mess you up on your runs. and always remember to walk the line that you want to drive.

Good points. I also look behind me while walking, so see if I can help find a nice line to follow. Don't worry about me going slow, I drive a Mustang, it's not going to go (time wise) fast (except on the straights! lol). Even w/ some VictoRacers, wheelspin is a HUGE problem w/ my car, and a greater problem w/ my buddies 86 GT (he makes 478rwtq! eek!) All in good fun though!
