2002 Envoy-Transmission cooler location

Just got this vehicle and it says on the paperwork that it has a automatic transmission cooler. The trouble is I don't see one. On other vehicles you can see the extra cooler(not counting the one that's in the radiator) right behind the grill. Most of those factory coolers are the stacked plate design and not the tube and fin type. Where is the factory cooler located on the Envoy? Thanks for the advice! John

You talk like there should be 2 coolers. I have a 2003 SLT and the only transmission oil cooler is integral to and at the bottom of the radiator. If you look at the bottom of the radiator, you can see the transmission cooler lines in and out. I verified this by referring to the Factory Service Manual.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I was talking about 2 coolers. I think most vehicles have the cooler in the radiator but other vehicles(trucks&SUV'S)that have the towing package usually have the extra cooler mounted in the grill area. I have a 95 Explorer and it didn't come with the extra cooler so I added one. I'm convinced that the extra cooler is good for the transmission. There is even a company(Derale?)that makes a pan with tubes going through it that is supposed to cool the tranny fluid. It also will hold a couple of extra quart's of tranny fluid.

You're right, too. Heat is the #1 cause of failure and premature wear on transmissions. Especially if you tow!! Or if you are like me and drive like a typical Metro Detroiter ;) The only thing Im hauling is a$$ LOL I would definately contact JCWhitney or Ebay for a trans cooler, get that sucker installed.

Unless you are towing a heavy trailer or frequently travel high speeds for extended periods there is no need to install a transmission cooler.

The factory (radiator integrated) cooler is plenty efficient enough to do the job for normal use. Just service the transmission regularly and check level and condition of fluid on a regular basis and you'll be all set.
