I have a 96 GC. My wipers only work when you use the washer fluid system. A mechanic told me to tap the wiper motor the next time it stopped. I am not mechanicly inclined. Can you access the wiper motor from under the hood to tap on it or is burried under cowling, etc.

If i need a motor or electrical parts, could anyone suggest online discount internet sites?

This is a tuffey. Does anyone have any idea where to start diagnosing the problem assuming the tapping the motor does't work?

Having the same type of trouble with my wipers.

How do I get under the front cowl?

I haven't looked to closely at it yet, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I found the problem with the wipers. Well someone else found the problem and fixed it. It turned out to be the multifunction swithc in the stearing colomn that had to be replaced.

What he did was run a multi tester on the wires to the motor and check the wires in the colomn.

After a lot of seraching on the web i got very disgusted. I found one site that carried the part but it was more money than what the dealer wanted. By the way the dealer wanted $84.00 for the part and $80.00 labor to instal. That is one hour.

I eventually found an aftermarket part at Auto Zone for $52.00 and no more than 15 minutes he had the old part out and replaced an back together. If i remember the maker was Wells. It had to be special ordered but next time i need any parts i will check auto zone 1st.

I also learned that this factory part is the weakest link in the system. In other words start at the switch 1st.

Hi Pasquot,

To get to the switch mechanism, yo need t pull the steering wheel, don't you?

How hard was it to do that?

Thanks,

That's what i thought too, All he did was take the screws out of the bottom cover that surounds the switch, then the top cove comes off and then the switch is exposed. He just unplugged the wiring and replaced it with the new unit. That is why it didn't take him very long. It was soo easy, i could have almost done it myself. By the way, he never did this before. We found the information in the Clymer repair manual that i borrowed.

Thanks, That a relief to know I don't have to mess with the steering wheel.

Do you remember the name of the part? or the number?

Thanks,

Happy Holidays

If i remember i went to auto zone web site. I believe it has directions to follow for brand, model and year of vehicle.

The name of the switch is (multi fuction switch) which simply means it controls the turnsignals and windshield wiper system.

The other option is that if you have an auto zone near you is just to go to it and order it in person. I had to do that anyway to actually order and pay for the part and pick it up.

Good Luck and Merry Christmass
