89 Bronco II - No or little spark

My son has a 89 Bronco II that will not start anymore. The engine would run for approximately 30 minutes until it got hot then just died. There was no spark getting the the spark plugs. When it cooled off, it would start again, now it has quit completely.

I checked the coil and it is with-in specs. I have spark getting to the center pin of the distributor. It has a new distributor, rotor and wires. I replaced the TFI module on the distributor twice because of what I read about heat causing them to fail. The first TFI Module I was suspecious of to start with. The timing/distributor are on the mark. I have even rotated the distributor a couple of teeth each way, but no change.

I have read some of the feedback forums that mention checking the "CPS". What is this and where is it? I have a Chiltons and Haynes manual and neither mention this for the 2.9L engine with an automatic trans.

The only thing left that I can think of is the EEC, but I have no indications (idiot lights) that something is wrong. Does anyone know of a way to test the module or what signals I should look for at the TFI module?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

My 88 had the same problem it took me 3 weeks to finally find the problem but its fixed and running great.

i have changed everything from the distributor to the coil, the modual, wires and plugs still had the problem.

I found a broken wire in the wireing harnes just over the left valve cover and after i spliced it back it started like nothing was wrong.

Hope this helps.

OR it could be the stator and *where is my darn book?* the ignition module on the distributor. Mine did the same thing *its an 87 though* and it drove me nuts until I took it to a shop and spent the cash to get her fixed. Hope that helps!!!

The CPS is your Crankshaft Posistioning sensor That could be the posible problem....drop your gas tank and check you have another fuel pump in there if that pump is bad your truck is starving for fuel mine did the same thing till I changed that then it ran fine...If you have any questions just ask
