Left turn signal and brake lites linked

I have a 1999 Ranger stepside. When the brake is applied the left turn signal lights front and back are displayed. When the left turn signal is blinking and then the brake is applied the blinking ceases and brake lights and left turn signal light remain on. The right turn signal works fine with or without the brake applied. Checked the bulbs in the rear tail light and they were ok. Could this problem be caused by the blinker relay? Or is the problem in the turn signal switch on the steering column?

i would say it is a wiring issue
maybe something cut the two wires and they are touching

The wiring harness in the steering column of some 1999 rangers (and some explorers) was recalled. Are you the original owner of the ranger? If so, did you take it into the dealership when the recall came out to have the wiring harness replaced? If not, do you know if the previous owner took it in?

I only know this, because my first ranger was a 1999 with a 3.0.....They recalled the wiring harness (steering column), because on several vehicles (mine included) the windshield wipers had issues (swiping once when not turned on, not working on the intermittent speeds)....If the wiring harness in your ranger was not replaced when the recall occured, that could be your problem...

Just a thought.

I had the same problem with mine, The problem that I found was someone had installed a quick trailer lighting harness on it. It was a good design it plugged into the exisiting harness without having to cut into any wires. But anyway I removed it and everything is working fine now.
