What is the largest size tire that I can fit in a 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0L? I currently have P255/70R16, can I go larger without having problems?

You can't just throw larger tires under your vehicle because they fit under the wheel wells. You have to take into consideration the overall gear ratio and if your stock components can handle the extra unspung weight. I would consult a pro with the proper formulas for gearing and components before making your stock vehicle unsafe.

Don't worry about it. It's not THAT complicated... quite simple really...
with the stock lift that we have (I've got a 99 4x4) you can easily clear 31x10.5 tires WITH NO RUBBING...ever. If you really want to go bigger, you can get 32x11.5 - even on the stock rims (but that is a questionable practice since they are only 7" wide) with minimal rubbing. I would steer clear of the 32's if I were you. I've got 31x10.5 Good Year Wrangler A/T and I love them to death. PERFECT size for the truck. With a 16" rim, you've got metric sizes, so for you...
255-70-16 = 30x10
255-75-16 = 31x10
265-70-16 = 30.5x10.5
265-75-16 = 31.5x10.5
Don't go any larger than 31.5 unless you want to regear and change you're speedo gear.
With the 31x10.5, my speedo reads 3 mph slow, and the shifting (manual) is minimally affected. Find out what gear ratio you've got. If you have 3.73, you're ok...if you've got 4.10, you will be very well off and will probably enjoy the better gas milage. I don't think that these Rangers came with any smaller gear ratios, but check yours just to be sure.
