I am waiting delivery of a 2004 Tahoe. Does anyone know the recommended engine oil specifications for the 5.3 liter V8?

Thanks

SAE 5W-30 is recommeded. 10W-30 is acceptable if 5W-30 isn't available and the temperature never gets below 0 degrees (F) or 18 degrees (C).

If you're in extreme cold weather, where the temp drops below -20 (F), you can use 5W-30 synthetic or 0W-30 for easier cold starting.

DO NOT use 10W-40, 20W-50, or other multigrades not recommended.

According to GM, synthetic oil isn't necessary, except for the extreme cold situation mentioned above.

Good old dino-oil is all you need.

considering the fact that (unsure about the 04 and up models) you better use synthetic oil because all tahoe suburbans trucks by chevy pretty much have a problem with piston slap. you have a new system on your rig that goes by engine revolutions and not mileage when getting your oil changed, it's the same on the vettes look in your manuel.

I live in a warm climate, and @ 1100 I changed the oil to Royal Purple 10W-30.

I believe the prerequisite for warrenty purposes, is that the front of the oil container has a "star" symbol which says "for use in gasoline powered vehicles".
