So, I'd like to get started "chasing cones."
There is an upcoming Solo II drivers school which I'd like to attend.
Would anybody happen to know what goes down in this 2 day session?
And, where can I get Snell helmet?

Thanx, mang! It's interesting to find out that back in 96, it consisted of 60+ students now it's up to 75 students...

Hopefully, this will be a stepping stone to actual road-racing w/ a more capable car in the future. I was looking at the local Road America course... Holy sh*t! There's a HELLA long straight  , a shorter one, some bends and a handful of 90° turns.

chances are, your local SCCA Region is putting on the SOLO II/Autocross school.

if so, it's a 2 day event. one day in the classroom, reviewing with instructors on the finer points of driving, tyre pressures and proper adjustments, suspension tuning, handling the steering wheel, proper turning, faster braking, etc. very possibly you'll get a chance to watch a video by Dick Turner and examine some of his excerpts from his book, "Winning SOLO II/Autocross Championships"

he has a lot of useful info, and i encourage reading the book yourself a few times. he will make you faster.

the second day, they should give you a lot of seat time. they'll give you a quick intro to cone setups, safety regulations, and a good walk-through on teching a car for safety prior to racing. once that is completed and all cars are properly tech'd for safety, they'll let you guys practice pretty much all you learned the day before... from running your car through a skidpad to get your tyre pressures adjusted properly, to navigating a few cones to find your fastest line, hard braking, and efficient launching.

we just completed our school here, and i wish i woulda taken some video of it to show around now.

I would add that you shouldn't think that you have to go to school before starting autocrossing. I dare say that the school would be more productive if you had run an event or two first, but in any event autocross is very much "come as you are" racing. You'll have a blast at an event school or no.

That book looks very interesting, though.

go to www.racerwholesale.com they have great prices on lots of items. if you are just going to auto-x, the $99 helmet is just fine! and if you are going to be in the heat, get it open faced. once you progess to the track, then the full face are better. i also like gloves on my hands for grip. good luck.
