2000 Prelude SH vs. 2004 Honda S2000 vs. 2004 Evo

I'm wanting a fast car that is sort of cheap but fast and fun to drive. I can max it out at $12k without financing, but i wouldn't mind financing them if i need too. Which of these cars are better??

it would be damn hard to find any of those for 12k or under... and by evo do u mean evoVIII?

I'm guessing you posted this in the other forums as well.
Well the Prelude is at the bottom of the list as far as preformance goes. But is Ultimatley cheeper.
The S2000 is a good option because it is the fastest non forced induction 4cyl on the market @ 243whp. It also has 50/50 weight distribution for beter handling. Drawbacks are that its only a 2 seater and its terrible to drive in the winter. It's also about $34K if I recall right
The Evo would be my choice (you'll find out why in a min).
The MR Evolution pumps out a whoping 300whp on an AWD Drivetrain. It is also a 4 door so very roomy. Just enough to break the $30K mark.
It's funny you should ask this, I am a Prelude owner and AM looking to buy a new car. I was at the dealership the other day and had narrowed my choices down to a S2000 and a Evolution. Great minds think alike.:)

Because thats called "extra weight." If you really need air, roll the windows down like everyone else that takes their A/C components out of the car.;)

is the MR an upgraded Evo? Because I know the Evo is putting out 276hp from a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine. I'd personally go for the STI, but that's just me.

This is correct. The MR is basicly the Equivilant of a STI Impreza.
Standard:
6-Speed, Close Ratio Manual Transmission
BBS Forged Alloy Wheels
Shift Panel "MR" Identification Plate
Bilstein Front & Rear Shocks
HID Headlamps
Aluminum Roof
MR Edition Floor Mats
MR Edition Exterior Badge
Wheel Locks
Optional:
Vortex Roof Spoiler
Aluminum / Carbon Fiber Brake Grip
Aluminum Shift Knob & Sport Pedals
Turbo Boost Gauge

Get neither.
My suggestion, a 95 Prelude with an H22 swap. Cheaper than all those cars, yet will be much quicker than your stock 01' Lude. (Atleast thats how I feel, basing this on what I've seen).

The Evo does come w/ A/c. They made a new trim level that takes all the luxuries, like pw, pd, ac, ands some other stuff, basically for weight reduction. It's also cheaper and can be easily spotted by the black side mirrors. If i remember correctly it also comes in very limited colors. Imagine an EVO with no interior power options and a few hundre pounds lighter. Just to let you know.

dude for the average 29k you'd spend on an evo or an s2k you could get a 4th gen lude for 5k swap a jdmh22 3.8k a turbo kit 2.8k-3.2k suspension mods(coilovers, struts, and sways) maybe depending on copanys 6.2k, and body kit and spray for 3.9k and still got some money for tiresand wheels and only spend around $24,000 and have a better car and cash

You need the AC. It is for defrosting and defogging purposes and won't you have to sit in grid lock traffic in 90 degree temp without AC? I recently had my AC removed but it has been raining here from the hurricanes and my windows always get fogged up and wouldn't defog without the AC so I had to open the windows while it was pouring rain.

Last I checked, MOST those who are choosing to buy a car w/o A/C or are stripping their car of the A/C, don't have intentions of everyday driving to advoid those situations, they are racing the car that they are doing it do. In which case, you won't need to worry about gridlock traffic in 90 degree weather and/or foggy windows because of rain.;)
Plus there are MANY other means of venting the car w/o rolling down the window. Roof Scoop? Many Race ready Evolutions have them.;)

Yea, the best prices I've seen for a used S2000 is low 20k's and mid 20k's for EVO VIIIs. Unless hes got some dealer connection or is stealing the car, hes not going to find one for $12,000 American.

*sigh* The Honda guys can whine all they want, the Prelude isn't even in the same class as the Evo, no matter what you swap into it.
If you're a younger enthusiast, go with the Evo; I can't think of an easier car to drive at the limit. Very stable and very predictable.

No matter what the comparison, EVERYONE knows that you can buy a cheaper car and make it fast for the cost of a new car. You're not contributing anything.
Besides, making a cheap car as fast as a new car with the price difference doesnt make the cheap car any better than the new car. In fact its probably more undrivable (esp if its a higher HP FWD.)

I'd forget the prelude.
So then, Now that out of the way... S2000 or Evo. Hmmm. This depends on your situation. If you really need the 4 doors and 4 seats, the Evo is shouting at you. Its a great capable car, with buckets of power, and the handeling to contain it all (all be it due to AWD rather that wieght distribution.)
If you can get away with being selfish, and indulging in a real back to basics driving experiance, then the S2000 it would be. While it doesn't produce the power that an Evo will, Its still a lot lighter, and will leave you with a grin from ear to ear.
If you really want some fun, Howabout the Lotus Elise 111R VVTi. Ok is striped out, and not that user friendly, but hey...
...all in the name of a good drive!

Pretty much no competition here as far as I am concerned, EVO all the way. Don't get me wrong, the S2000 was awesome three years ago before the EVO, STI, 350Z, RX-8, and even the SRT-4. I'd be hard pressed to even get an S2000 over a brand new RSX Type S. As far as the STI and EVO comparison, that is way off topic and so is this, but I wouldn't underestimate the EVO. Perhaps alittle more research on both cars would change your opinion, cuz then you would realize that as far as performance goes the EVO has pretty much walked away from the STI. Just an example, there is a race going on right now to see who is the first EVO owner to hit 10s on stock turbo and No NOS, I find that amazing because no STI has even hit 10s yet with an upgraded turbo. That's how far ahead the EVO is of the USDM STI right now.

Last I checked, ESX has an STi in the 8's.
3000ways
10-11-2004, 10:22 AM
No the ESX is WRX, not the USDM STI. Also the ESX has a hella of a lot of money in it, no EVO or WRX or STI has anywhere near the money in it as the ESX WRX. That's why the ESX WRX runs low 9s (it has never ran a 8) and no other WRX or STI comes even close to matching it's time.

Nope, I just looked it up in Boost magazine. It's a 2004 STi with the 2.5L engine. It's running an Innovative GT72 turbocharger, making 810 bhp @ 7000 rpm and 589 lb-ft @ 6700 rpm at a maximum psi of 45, sending it through a beefed-up 4-speed automatic from the Subaru SVX. At the time the article I'm reading was written, its best time was a 9.60 @ 144 mph, but I believe that it's hit 8's by now...I'll look into it some more.

10-11-2004, 08:00 PM
Actually the ESX is a stroked EJ20, so it's the best of both worlds, larger engine and the tuning potential of the WRX EJ20 and this car also has sponsoring from Subaru, so yes there is big money in this car.

Mitsubishi is almost bankrupt and they are being bailed out by Mitsubishi's other companies. Doesn't surprise me at all, their vehicles aren't nearly as reliable as those of the other five major Japanese carmakers. Due to this, they have a low customer loyalty rating, which is really killing their sales. They've been doing a bit better lately, so we'll see if they can pull through.
