Recording race sounds in hi fidelity?

Having been to the JGTC last month, I was amazed at the incredible volume of the engines as they roared past.. ears would start ringing as they tore across the track.
I recorded the race on a miniDV camcorder, but on playback, the sound had just lost something. It was dull and didn't have the impact of the real thing, even on full volume. To put it simply, it just sounded 'muddy.'
Is there any way with current technology to accurately capture the ambience of a race?
